When this song was new, my sister attended UMass at Amherst. A professor asked an English lit class to bring in the lyrics to their favorite song; almost the entire class brought in the lyric sheet contained in this LP for Stairway to Heaven. The puzzled professor could not understand why so many brought in the lyrics, when no one could explain the lyrics. Finally, one student blurted out "because it sounds f***ing fantastic when you're stoned."

Jimmy Page gives a brilliant explanation of Stairway to Heaven during a BBC interview. (KZitem it) The musical instrument transitions from acoustic and recorder, to 12 string electric, drums coming in, the fanfare, the immortal gutar solo, the trill leading into " as we wind on down the road" all of it encompassing Plants magnficent vocal ranges, solidifies the masterpiece composition as the greatest rock song of all time, IMO. Though time will eventually take away its band members, Led Zeppelin music will live on forever. ❤

Freshman year 1971-1972 in college. Hanging out in my dorm room with several other dorm mates and gals (it was a co-ed dorm), listening to records. Someone walked in with this newly released album, puts it on the turntable. When it gets to STH, about 1/4th of the way in, we all stopped talking...turned it up...and at the climax we were all totally blown away!! We all agreed "Let's hear that again" and again and again. Could not get enough of the music we all just experienced. Cannot count how many times I've heard it since, as it still takes me back to that day in the dorm. With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)

Beautiful, classic LZ. Never get tired of the journey this song takes us on with the incredible and diverse music and vocals.🎶I first heard it when my oldest brother was playing the album in his room and I quietly snuck in to join him. It literally felt like time stood still as Plant sang the first few lines and then of course it just blew my mind from there. Thanks so much guys for posting this one. Great to see you both react to it - very emotional (I'm with you Lex!)🧡

You are back. Building a stairway to the internet one reaction at a time. Great reaction to perhaps the greatest rock classic of all time. My high school back in Texas had a 4 Watt radio station that transmitted out about a block in terms of how far the signal went. I think they played stairway to Heaven at least once an hour every day my sophomore year. A great stairway to the Patreon channel as well.

What's funny about true groundbreaking art, is that it takes awhile to catch on. The Beatles Revolver (arguably their best album) was out sold upon it's release, and wasn't really recognized for how great it was for a few years. Same with this song, at first it was "Okay this is different" and it really took some time to get to the status it deserved.

I would never call it overrated. It has one of the best drum parts of all time and one of the top 3 guitar solos of all time. But in my 54 years, it is not my go-to song or even album. I pretty much wore out the groves of LZ4 in high school. Mostly, for me, it starts too slow. I want to hear Bonham's intro forward.

Personally, i like the recorded version of STH better than any live version I've heard (not the same i can say for many other Zep tunes) - it's near perfection with it's beautifully paced buildup and anthemic qualities...Jimmy Page is my 2nd GEGPOAT, but Hendrix is 1st, and you guys may want to consider a reaction to the Jimi Hendrix 1970 live album Band Of Gypsies Tracks 1&2 (Who Knows & Machine Gun)...performances you'll probably never forget 👍

I remember the night Stairway became my favorite song. In 1975 I was at a high school dance with my new girlfriend. Stairway was the last song of the night, and it was a very awkward song to dance to because of the tempo changes. It started as a cheek-to-cheek slow dance, became a self-conscious rock wiggle, and ended with couples embracing again for the final line. When that line came "...and she buying a stairway to heaven" she kissed me, and Oh what a kiss it was! Still tied for my favorite song with Kashmir, and always my favorite band. Great reaction, guys.

The problem with Stairway isn't that it's overrated, it's that it's over played. The only good thing about most classic rock stations dying is that this song gets played a lot less making it a more welcome listen. Growing up, we had a stereo for vinyl records and 8-track tapes, but the tuner was dead. It we wanted to hear music on the radio, all we had were a few zAm Clock radios. To give an idea of the New York AM station, they played a lot of Beatles, but almost exclusively pre-Sgt Peppers. Though it was the mid to later 1970s, they rarely played 1970s music unless it was very soft. I couldn't tell you the year, but I remember my surprise the day I heard Stairway to Heaven on that station. From that moment, for years, the moment when the music cuts out and Jimmy Page plays the set of triple strummed chords just before the solo, thise three chords became the audible version of the British flag, but specifically for British rock.
