For those saying that you'll break your horses' legs by doing this - very rare indeed. Hedges have a lot of 'give' in them, and providing there's no wire in there, they are pretty safe to jump, and most horses enjoy jumping them.

Agreed, if you look close there legs pass right through the top part, it depends on the place and the hedge

Bella Goodridge I totally agree, like the last horse was able to go straight through the jump no problem 😂😂I go hunting and we always make sure about everything we jump is safe and with least risk of injury🙂🙂🙂My pony loves hunting and so do all the horses, and I'm not lying My pony gets so exited when she sees hounds even while not hunting😄😄😄

But don't say that the horses enjoy jumping them. There's no way you know that. And I always say if you leave a horse in a huge open pasture and put up some hedge jumps you're going to wait a hell of a long time to ever see that jump taken by a horse. They would not be doing this on their own unless somebody force them to.

For those people who say it's ridiculously dangerous and shouldn't be done, I don't suppose you've ever been out with the ledbury? Or any other british pack? Notice how all the riders jump at the same part of the hedge? It's the lowest and safest part. Notice how strangely the hedge is trimmed, so part of it is a low groove and how it has curved edges? The farmer's done that so it's a proper jump. People do check what they're jumping you know. They're far more cautious than sometimes displayed, as actually they care a great deal about there horses and the last thing they want is to see them hurt.

Same at the Monmouth Hunt all the hedges and jumps we are most likely going to jump we inspect and make sure it's safe and that there are routes around it so if you don't want to jump you don't have to!

Jumping at speed with other horses, especially over natural obstacles is the most natural thing for a horse anyway, what do people thing they do in the wild 'Wait guys, lets take this one at a time at a steady controlled canter, make sure you're on the right leg now'

Wow, English horse riding! What about hunting... In Poland we organize "fox hunting" every autumn. There is a "fox" rider and he has a fox tail sewed to his shoulder. Other riders must catch the "fox". The name of the game is HUBERTUS. We have a lot of fun!

+GotSnowedIn He was the one that refused when they first tried to jump it, I think he was scared, not too confident and didn't trust his rider. That's why the jump wasn't successful. The rider's technique was all over the place as well.

How'd you know it's laziness? If you got a group of people together of all different breeds and heights and health and athletic ability pretty sure they wouldn't all be able to jump the same obstacles. Laziness is usually boredom or illness rarely does real laziness exist. He was scared and didn't want to do it hence the refusal by the same horse, he knew. I've heard of/know quite a few that drug their horses up before hunts because of the horses health and abilities. Quite alot of hunting people seem to give their horses basic exercise or almost field ornaments and only get them ready for hunting a short time before so could be another reason.

You have clearly never hunted... Not the bigger jumps at least. You have to sit tall and ride into it strong, you put yourself in a position where yes you can get left behind a bit but otherwise you will most likely have your horse stop or run out... Its like a harder version of crosscountry :)

@dikkedoperwt not hard enough to cut. And even if it did scratch, it's preety normal to get scratches when going across countryside. This summer I was riding in shorts and a bikinin and always ended the trails with a lot of scratches! and once my mare decided to sprint across a spiky vine trek and I got one stuck to my face and arm! I looked like hell and she only got tiny spike on her chest that didn't even bleed. Wish I was furry like she is! LOL

We're well aware of possible danger. BUT WE LOVE our horses & we don't want to be injured. You can assure yourselves all precautions are taken. Yes hunting g, or just cross country can be dangerous. A bus hitting you, or a slip in your bed can be dangerous. Life is no guarantee. Believe me there's no true horse person that will put their animal in danger.
