Lee Hsien Yang (LHY) has paid S$619,335.53 to Ministers K Shanmugam and Vivian Balakrishnan following a defamation ruling. The payment, made after a November 2023 court decision, covered damages and legal costs awarded to the ministers after they sued LHY over a Facebook post.
LHY explained that the payment was necessary to protect 38 Oxley Road, his family home and “significant asset” in Singapore, where his sister, Dr Lee Wei Ling, who is ill, currently resides.
His father, the late Lee Kuan Yew, stated in his will that his last wish was for the house to be demolished after Dr Lee no longer resided there.
While the ministers have stated they will donate the sum to charity, it is important to note the potential tax benefits. Under Singapore’s tax laws, charitable donations can result in a tax deduction of 2.5 times the donated amount. Given the ministers' typical income of S$1.76 million, this could lead to tax savings of around S$120,000 each.
However, this benefit is unlikely to significantly impact Mr Shanmugam’s financial standing, as he reportedly made S$88 million from the sale of his Astrid Hill property in August 2023.
