Challenger LeRoy Murphy scored a 14th round TKO over defending champion Marvin Camel Saturday night to capture the International Boxing Federation cruiserweight title.
Murphy, 26, Chicago, had to be rushed from the ring due to the angry partisan crowd after Camel, of Ronan, Mont., developed severe cuts around the eyes and the referee stopped the bout.
Camel, a heavy favorite, was ahead on points when the fight was called.
Camel gave Murphy a boxing lesson in the first four rounds but Murphy opened a cut over Camel's right eye with a slashing right cross in the fifth round. Camel survived to win the sixth and seventh rounds but with 30 seconds left in the eighth, Murphy floored Camel with a stiff right to the jaw for the bout's only knockdown.
The battered and bloody Camel came back, however, to easily win the 10th, 11th and 12th rounds.
The fighters drew the 13th but the first punch in the 14th round opened a gash over Camel's left eye and it spurted blood all over the ring. Murphy narrowly won the round.
Referee Dan Jansic called the fight before the 15th and final round when he decided Camel was too injured to continue although Camel, otherwise unhurt, wanted to go on.
Murphy had to be rushed from the ring through the booing crowd while Camel stood in the ring and relished the home-state cheers.
Murphy is now 21-0 with 18 TKOs. It was Camel's sixth loss in 55 fights.
