I used to commute this route every day into Leeds. (2001 to 2005). It is so awesome to see it from the drivers side view rather than window view. A blonde girl used to get on at south elmsall and i really really liked her, but never had the guts to talk to her lol.

on the modern stuff like the DVT, HST etc... you can simply press a button in the cab which is called the CCTV event button. By pressing the button the CCTV camera takes a still picture and sends it straight to control. Or the alternative is to let a member of staff or signal man know at the next stop

How does the driver deal with urgent toilet needs - if he gets the "trots" for example? How did they deal with it on the footplate of a steam train? I've always wondered.

The problem with HS2 (and 3, 4, 5 etc) is where to put them so that they can provide the service required into the target destinations, without knocking down thousands of buildings on the way. Britain's desperately small to try and squeeze a high speed network into new locations and, of course, the existing lines of route are the root (or should that be route?) problem. I just watched a cab ride of one of Spain's latest AVE (high speed) routes from Barcelona to Figueres, largely though open country but starting underground in Barca, staying there until out of the city a la HS1, doing the same trick at the only intermediate stop, and ploughing its way through the landscape in a range of tunnels reminiscent of HS1 - they even look the same. But, of course, Spain has the open spaces. The UK does not...but is does need the HS routes.

we have had to knock down things for literally every major project we have ever undertaken - just look at heathrow or the M621. The fact is that we have to do that in order to progress and always will, one of the drawbacks of living in Britain. I think what people fail to realise is that we have to keep progressing for our and that we can't simply stop for their benefit. Far too many people in this country, especially ones who rely on constant progress (i.e. pensioners relying on growth-derived income to fund their pensions) simply think that once they have a pleasant life which was achieved through growth, that everyone should stop so they can enjoy it. Others want their turn.

I don't know why some people have this need to blame everything on a particular group of people. The idea that pensioners do not want the economy to expand is total nonsense. The biggest single reason to oppose HS2 is that it will be a huge loss-maker and will not expand the U. K economy. In no circumstances will HS2 ever pay for itself which, of course, is why private finance will not touch the project with a barge pole. People who support HS2 should ask themselves why private capital which rushed to finance the Dartford Bridge, the Channel Tunnel, and new schools and hospitals under Tony Blair will not go near HS2.

+Liam Pennington If it get's me to where I need to be faster, then it gets a yes vote from me. I personally don't see what's wrong with us updating our rail systems to catch up with London. And the pacers are going to be completely replaced by 2019 anyway, so I don't know why you're bringing them up. Anything to bring the North up to date is fine with me. However, I do find it a shame that we're playing catch up with London in the first place, since we were the real innovators during the industrial revolution.
