Left-brained or right-brained: is it a myth or a fact? The MS and PhD in neuroscience, Claudia Feitosa-Santana, with a postdoc from The University of Chicago, Claudia Feitosa-Santana, tell us abou the history of this myth and how the neuroscience studies show us evidences that this a myth.

Since the 19th Century the myth is around, when scientists found that the left brain has a fundamental role for language (but today we know that this is not the case for everyone and some people have these functions on the right side), it became popular with the book Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson with the idea of emotional right side competes with the rational left side. Then, influenced by the Nobel Roger Sperry who dedicated himself to studying the divided brain, understanding what types of functions were most located on one side or the other of the brain, but he never advocated this simplification of connecting intuitive personalities to the right and analytical sides to the left side and he said that in the brain of a normal person the two hemispheres worked together.
