Can I also say that dropping “American” from the title is really helpful because a lot of people outside of America have never really given the NASB a chance, perhaps due to its title. I only really came to it around 4 years ago, having been in ministry here in the UK for around 15 years. I got a copy of the LSB NT&Psalms and I’ve been impressed by it so far.

@@timwildsmith yeah, it’s a shame that more people here in Scotland haven’t really had much exposure to it - I guess there was never an anglicised version made due to it being perceived as a North American translation. It’s blessed me of late for sure, and the LSB likewise. Looking forward to seeing what they come out with in the upcoming editions.

Folks would be surprised how ofter this is the case. My good friend took to a bookstore in 1995 to buy a new bible and the only options available were the NIV and NASB. In my ignorance, I chose the NIV over the NASB purely because I didn't think a national identity should be in a translation name. Today, I have used the NASB and ESV for many years, the NIV is long abandoned.

I recently bought one if these in red cowhide, wide margin. I'm a little more than halfway with a complete read-through and I truly like it. It is very similar to the 95 NASB and in some areas word for word. It does seem to translate a lot more of the conjunctions than the NASB. Not something I would normally look for but as I was comparing it to my 95 as I read it definitely stood out. I love the use of Yahweh (it's on in the Old Testament). We should have made thar change in our bibles a long time ago.

I've been hunting for a "general purpose" bible and I settled on an lsb over others specifically because of the use of "yahweh" and similarity to nasb. I came here trying to decide if I wanted faux or genuine leather and I'm pleasantly surprised to see the quality of these books. But over the last 40 years I've seen 'em become pretty popular. My primary LSB is a handy size, which is actually a bit bigger than I prefer. But it's a great physical production, and I love the translation. 10:04 It's not a wide margin edition, but it might as well be. 🙂 It's the best Bible for writing in the margin that I've ever had since I quit using my Cambridge wide margin KJV on a regular basis over 20 years ago.

@@timwildsmith I dunno. I think the Hebrew name “Yeshua” is closer to the Greek pronunciation “Iēsous” (Ἰησοῦς) than the English rendition “Jesus.” And “James” isn’t even in Greek Bible, even in Greek it is rendered “Iakōbos” (Ἰάκωβος) or “Iakōb”(Ἰακώβ), which is just “Jacob” in Greek. The names “Jesus” and “James” come not from the original Greek but from the Latin rendition of the Greek (Iesus and Iacomus respectively). And there are many other such names from the Latin. Being that one believer look at me in astonishment and said, “Jesus was a Jew?!” when I mentioned that fact, a version that preserves their Jewish names-which are the names they were actually called-from a reputable translator would be nice.

As always, great review Tim. I know you review a lot of translations. But the most important part of the Bible is the translation. Is there fidelity to the original? I mean, is it faithful? This is why so many versions you like fall short. Such as the NRSV, NLT, etc. They follow after things to appease people, rather than God - like the gender-inclusive language. But just as God is jealous for his believers; I think he is also zealous for his Word. My point in this whole thing is to choose wisely. Not based on feeling or otherwise.
