-Okay for starters, my jaw was hanging OPEN during most of this episode. The Kill Box is one of the most beloved fights in Critical Role history spanning just under four hours of real time gameplay. This was more than I could have hoped for. -Allow me to paint a word picture. Grog had been battling Kevdak in single combat for over half an hour, but the battle wasn't going well, leading to his now immortal shout of "VOX MACHINA! FUCK! SHIT! UUUUUP!" See, in the Campaign, there was this whole side story about a member of the herd named Greenbeard who was sort of whispering insidiously in Kevdak's ear. If it weren't for Greenbeard, Kevdak may never have bent the knee to the dragons. Vox Machina was throwing out every weapon in their arsenal, but it was still not looking good for them. Most were very injured and had used their most powerful spells. Greenbeard healed Kevdak and Vox Machina had to whittle him down again. Grog was at deaths door with only one hit point left, so Vex put him in the medallion to keep him safe. Another round goes by and they're trying to run but still taking damage. Finally Travis(Grog) convinces Laura(Vex) to let him out of the locket for one last desperate gamble. Upon releasing Grog from the Necklace right above Kevdak, Grog uses a Reckless Attack, allowing him to roll twice and take the higher of the two dice. He rolled a natural one, the lowest you can roll followed immediately by a natural 20, the highest you can roll and a critical hit, doing double damage. It was enough. Upon reading out the damage total, Matt looks over at Travis and simply asks, "How do you wanna do this?" Travis then describes his epic descent from the heavens, screaming "FOR STRONGJAW!" and cleaving Kevdak in twain. It was a BEAUTIFUL DnD moment where the dice just worked out perfectly in his favor. Upon hitting the ground though, Grog takes 25 points of falling damage and immediately falls unconscious. Any time people are discussing their favorite Vox Machina moments, The Kill Box ALWAYS comes up. -I'm not mad at how they simplified Grog's backstory and the herd because I'd rather they cut the entire side story out than only devote a little time to it and doing it poorly. This was perfect just as it was. -That is definitely Sam Riegel(Scanlan)doing the vocals for the RAGE song and it SLAPS. -Ah yes...Kaylie. Yes, that 100% happened in the Campaign. Scanlan definitely inadvertently tried to sleep with his own daughter, not having known she even existed. The funny thing too is that a daughter wasn't anything he put in his backstory. Matt, the dungeon master, absolutely surprised him with that and the way it played out was perfect. Expect bog changes on the horizon for Scanlan! -Grog now has The Titan Stone Knuckles. Made from the heart of a Primordial Titan, these knuckles were originally carried by a champion of The Storm Lord(Kord), until Kevdak beat him to death and took the knuckles off his corpse. I know it seemed like Grog could have pieced kevdak up if kevdak didn't have the knuckles, but Kevdak was nasty even without them. They grant the user the ability to cast Enlarge on themselves as you saw Kevdak do.

So you have most of this right, except for the part about Laura putting him in the locket to keep him safe and Travis having to convince her. I just watched that part of the fight less than an hour ago, and that's not what happens. She fully intended to do the drop. Travis said he was willing to go along with the plan. The song is a collab with Travis and Sam, with Travis doing the screaming of Rage

A lot of people have the traumatic brain injury theory when it comes to Grog. As I remember...most of the goliaths tend to be more brawn than brains, but even by goliath standards, Grog wasn't very smart. I think there was one time in the campaign when they polymorphed into eagles and Grog actually got smarter because the eagle had a higher intelligence stat than him! There's also the complication of, in the flashbacks in the last episode Grog was maybe a teenager (his age is never really clear), and what teenager isn't dumb? Overall, if you like the TBI head-canon, I think it's fine to imagine that several blows to the head probably didn't improve his intelligence.

25:35 Allura is a wizard. Meaning her magic comes from books and studying. It's the kind of magic that's the most like a rigorous science in DnD. Basically, wizards are the nerds of the DnD world. Technically anyone can become a wizard, you don't have to be born with magic or get it from a god like most other spellcasting classes, but it is quite expensive and time intensive, so in reality not many people actually have the opportunity. And of those that do, not all have the necessary aptitude for that kind of learning. And yeah. She's a badass.

Travis wasn’t entirely consistent with Grog’s intelligence. In regular RP he’d play up Grogs stupidity for humor, in higher stakes scenes or interactions where the outcome would be consequential he’d cut back on that. He never played Grog as brilliant or anything, but Grog definitely gains IQ points when things get serious.

Also because fighting is something Grog is good at. It wouldn't say he gains IQ points when he fights, it's more that it is his area of expertise. He doesn't fight by strength alone, he uses his smarts/wisdom for it too. Especially as he fights alongside Vox Machina and incorporates some of their moves (or combo moves) when the situation calls for it.

There are a few moments in this season where the subtitles are wrong. He definitely says "Don't ever touch my friends". It bugs me whenever I see it. Great to see you back! Your reactions are always fantastic. The thing with Grog is that, while he has low intelligence, his wisdom isn't as bad (it's still only average, but higher than his intelligence), and depending on the situation he can often read a room. We see it with him addressing the Herd before the fight, and also his short speech afterwards which hits exactly right. Later in the episode as well, he sees Percy floundering with the trap planning timeline, you see him think for a second before he chimes in with "We need time for drinking" which makes everyone relax again.

Glad you had a good time! Welcome back! Grog just isn't very smart. I'm sure the beatings didn't help, but there's never been anything said that indicated they were the cause of his low intelligence in game. Out of game, Travis just happened to roll a really low number and used it for intelligence and then played it beautifully. If he doesn't always seem dim it's because Travis made the choice to make him battle smart, he has an instinctive understanding of strategy and war based on his lifelong fighting experience. The point being that not being smart does not mean one cannot learn, it just takes time, effort, and the willingness to set one's mind to it. He's also got a strong understading of the bonds that tie people together, how to maintain them and what makes them break, again all from personal experience. While Travis loved playing Grog as a loveable goof, Travis himself is very smart, and he's expressed that it was sometimes frustrating to hold back ideas because Grog wouldn't think of them so he found a logical way to contribute to the group. The moons are Catha (big and blue) and Ruidus (small and red). Catha is linked to the Moonweaver, a God, and is the moon most people pay attention to, Ruidus is seen as an ill-omen. This is the worlds common knowledge and Vox Machina's campaign never explored them more than that. No idea if Groon will make another appearance in the animation in the future. In the campaign we saw him a few more times, and Grog's "my strength comes from my friends" moment happened in Groon's presence. And was part of the process of getting Grog to set the sword down. I hope you get to it in the campaign because it was pretty epic. It happened a bit outside of the main story line though so once again it makes sense that they changed it up. Grog losing literally all strength was new and honestly hilarious so not a bad trade.

Welcome back! This was a great episode, and a lot of story beats were lifted directly from the stream. The moons have a lot to do with campaign three so I won't say much, but until campaign two the players kept forgetting there were two moons since it was all theater of the imagination and they weren't reminded of them all the time.

Just a quick note to elaborate on Grog's IQ. Its simply tied to his Intelligence Stat in D&D. Travis played Grog as a simple minded hulk to inhabit a slightly simpler character due to not really knowing the 'rules' of D&D and just wanted to hit things hard. Obviously Grog in the show (and to some extent in the campaign) still has to have lines of dialogue that make sense and forward the story. So its less about him being dumb as a hammer and more about where his base interests lie, namely hitting things hard, lovely lady folk and Ale.

Oh yeah, no, Grog being dumb isn't a goliath thing, or even necessarily a barbarian thing, it's just a Grog thing. He's a big dumb softie with a heart of gold and we love him for it. In terms of DnD, there's a few ways you can determine your character's stats (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Charisma and Intelligence), but most of them involve rolling dice. Travis just happened to have a really bad roll. His Intelligence ended up being 6. Where 10 is average for your standard NPC. Trinket has an intelligence of 4. Giant eagles have an intelligence of 8 in this game (which lead to a funny moment of Grog actually understanding numbers for the first time in his life when he got turned into a giant eagle one time). Most DnD characters have one or two stats that they just aren't very good at. Like, Vex has a strength of 7. She's really weak (you'd think that would make her bad at archery, but no, in DnD you just need to be dexterous to be good at shooting a bow). And Scanlan's wisdom was also 7. Meaning he did not make the best life decisions most of the time XD.
@sandpiperr
Жыл бұрын
When it comes to bows, it depends on the draw weight and a higher draw weight means more distance, so if she's more of a hand-to-hand close range archer she could probably get away with it by using a smaller bow with lower draw weight. However, they seem to have thrown that completely out in the animated series considering how beefy her arms are, and the fact that she could beat up Vax (I remember he wasn't necessarily very strong either, but his stat was still higher than hers) in s1e11, and then later there's a moment in s2e12 when she does something that would require quite a bit of strength. I guess they figured it was just too hard to make it work and still have action sequences, where as Grog's lack of intelligence and Scanlan's bad decision making were gold mines for comedic moments so they were definitely going to include those!

Regarding Grogs muscles remember after he got the medicine from Wilhan, it was mentioned that the curse on his muscles was gone but he would need some sort of stimulation to get them back to normal. This was what he needed. Also as far as the pendant goes, in the campaign it was a little different just due to the way game mechanics work. Grog was almost to 0 up and was surrounded so vex got him out of there where he couldn't be hit inside the pendant. Then when she let him out mainly cause they thought it would be cool and he ended up getting the killing blow but the fall damage brought him to 0.

Don't worry, you're unlikely to catch up to the animation with the campaign any time soon. IIRC you were at what, episode 4? The attack on Emon isn't until like episode 40ish. You've still got plenty of campaign to watch until you're in danger of getting into spoiler territory. And with Kaylie now introduced you can even watch past the dragon attack (in the campaign she showed up just before that in Emon). Once you've finished this season of LoVM you can watch at least until episode 56, if not 63 (bc they changed the order of some things).

Regarding Grog's intelligence, it's never been outright stated, but it has been heavily implied that yes, that beating Kevdak gave him is why Grog seems less smart than he was before. I think it's a good way to demonstrate that sometimes magical healing can only do so much depending on how quickly it's done after the injury, and how strong the spell is. Pike would have likely had what amounts to first level spells at the time.

He ended up dead at the end but he beat Kevdak. The rest is almost word for word from the campaign except in this fight Keyleth was in a different form (wind elemental). Vax = "Is his time limited?" Uhhhh how to say this. Unlimited and very limited at the same time? He does serve the goddess of Death. I'm assuming we will see this in maybe later seasons because there is a huge scene that HAS to be in the show that gives quite the answer to that question.
