Racing in the late '70s was completely different than racing in the late '80s or '90s...there were several fatalities every year, safety considerations were pretty much non-existent. Point is, you had to be an absolutely fearless driver to win.

And I don’t only blame his death on Didier Pironi, but I also blame it on the people at Ferrari. It should’ve been very clear what slow meant, and as much as I will never forgive Mr. Peroni , because I blame him in a way for Gille‘s death and I was a huge fan of Gilles it was NOT clear what slow meant and it should’ve been. If slow man told your position then the people at Ferrari should’ve told, Mr. Villeneuve and Mr. Peroni exactly what that meant !!!! and they didn’t so Ferrari are to blame for the LOSS OF THE great Gilles Villeneuve.

"His car control was extraordinary, ever compared with the many talented drivers I have had the opportunity to drive against over the years. He drove a Grand Prix car to the absolute limit of its ability." - Jackie Stewart on Gilles Villeneuve

I saw one of todays brightest stars Ferrari #1 driver Charles LeClerc drive Gilles car. He could not control it at all. I love Michael Schumacher. But I would bet money; If you put Gilles in Schumachers cars either the Benneton of the Schumacher Ferrari or Schumacher in Gilles Ferrari, Gilles would kill Schumacher or any other current driver or even during Senna's time. Gilles car was in an uncontrollable death trap. His mastery of the car was unparalleled.

Gilles Villeneuve: a man who was born to race,a fantastic driver with courage and balls of steel. He would do stuff i think Senna would never do. Thats why he was one of the best. No matter what happened to the car,if his front wing was making him race blind or driving on 2-3 wheels, nothing would hold him back. Great respect for Gilles. RIP

i think gilles had a lot less faults about his personality than senna. senna didn't think much, he felt. whilst there's nothing wrong with feeling and being emotional, it makes people do and say things that are totally unreasonably except in their own mind. that's a flaw in his character. gilles was honourable by anyone's standard. having read books about him, it wasn't easy for joann to be with him though.

Maybe he was the last driver/hero, he was spectacular, fearless and competitive on every situation, fighting for the 1st or the 12th place on the grid. Also, and many people don´t know this, he was very hard working and he had a very precise analisis of every situation. This was said by Lole Reutemann and Jody Scheckter, and on an interview made by Juan Fazzini for a magazine in Argentina in the beginning of 1981, he said: "... this is a transition year, maybe we can take 1 or 2 wins, but I´m looking forward for the next year, the work I´ve seen in the factory for next year it´s what gives me the strenght to carry on... I´m afraid that we will end fighting with Didier, because we are looking for the same thing, get the championship..."

I spoke to an older gentlemen at my workplace and while on the topic of motorsports I had asked him if he had ever watched F1 when he was younger. He had said no, then I asked him if he knew who Gilles Villeneuve was he said "oh yeah". Definitely shows how big he is in Canada and how great a driver he was.

What happened to Ferrari? They certainly don't sing opera in the garage anymore. Now they seem very cold and business like. Marco is a dick.... I could never like this team. Hope Fernando is really leaving.

I completely agree Gilles Villenueve was a suberb talent and one of the best in Formula One but i don't agree with your Senna comment, the race when Gilles was blinded by his front wing was brilliant driving but Senna also did things like that such as when he had never won a Brazil GP before, he was leading but had a problem and was stuck in 6th gear he managed to carry on and win the race and couldn't get out of the cockpit due to sheer physical exhaustion.
