John Peterson worked for USDA for 40 years leading policy in watershed conservation. In retirement, he served as Executive Director of the National Watershed Coalition and championed the successful passage of the Small Watershed Rehabilitation act of 2000, the first major USDA water resources legislation passed in the previous 22 years. John is also a veteran and retired in 1991 from the US Army after a 32-year active and active reserve career as an Infantry Colonel. In recognition of his leadership, the Organization of Professional Employees of USDA established a John W. Peterson Agricultural Scholarship. Today, he continues to volunteer with his local conservation district, Northern Virginia Soil Water Conservation District.
