Lenovo's wave of mega silent firings in early 2023 were absolutely despicable. They laid of thousands of really great people after posting record profits and bragging about moving up the Forbes list each quarter in their "All Hands" NA org sales meetings to those people that moved the needle for them. They ruined thousands of people's lives, especially those that relocated and even bought new homes during the peak of covid when Lenovo asked for their dedication to support and grow the business. Their warranty process is atrocious and considered terrible by anyone who has had to deal with service claims on top of this.

I just bought the Pro 7i, 32g memory, 4080, 1tb drive, at about 30% off on a black Friday sale. I looked for all the reviews I could find, and was wondering if I should wait for the AMD version. I'm glad I grabbed the 7i. It's replacing my Alienware M17R4 3070, that I bought after watching your review of it. It's been a great machine with absolutely no problems. I wasn't sure about going to the smaller screen, but so far, so good. Very happy with the display. I do hate to part with the M17R4 though.

@@shitmir I have to stop watching Mash It reviews.I got the Alienware after watching his review on the m17r4, now I bought the Pro 7i after watching his 7i / 9i comparison on Black Friday. I hate to say it, but I don't notice a lot of difference in the 2 while gaming. I'm using higher settings and getting much better frame rates, with a much nicer display, but I don't really notice it in the heat of battle. The 7i fans are a little louder, I think, but I use a IETS cooler that tends to be louder than the laptops fans. Temps stay good, in the 60 - 75 range on both. For everything other than gaming, I've been running it in Quiet mode with little if any fan noise. Even balanced mode isn't bad, but it can get louder than the m17r4 while gaming.

@@scottb5178 wow, that is quite an insight.. at this, one probably needs a 5 year gap between devices at this point to actually notice a remarkable and significant performance difference. Most likely, a very important difference that benefits this Legion is newer gen internals, cooling and longer support from this point.. In the Uk the price gap between m17r5 snd LP7 is about 600-700 pounds.. and I have to justify it to myself, eapecially because one can hardly notice that difference paying out in practice.. I am not a gamer (only on an ocassional weekend night off and older titles like Crysis 2/3, Just cause 3/4)), but need to appreciate my machine and be happy about it. Lenovo G770 with i5-2410m and 2GB Radeon HD 6650m has done that for the last 12 years🤣.. I think I “just” might notice some performance and efficiency advantage on 10 generation newer chips💁😀… But definitely, you are set for good 3 years, or until good and stable 3nm CPUs and GPUs show up.😃👍 until I get my new lappy, I live vicariously through you!

Great comparison and thanks for bringing this to us. Looks like that the Ryzen HX series Processors are not properly tuned in Lenovo Legion 7 Laptop, probably due to the fact they have been launched this year for the 1st time whereas Intel's HX series processors were launched last year and laptop vendors have had enough time to tune it. From the benchmarks you've shown, looks like the Ryzen processor is running at unnecessary higher clockspeed, irrespective of the actual workload. may be using 3rd party tools like like AMD APU tuning Utility to restrict the total CPU power during gaming can yield some better performance and battery life. I think this is due to the case that unlike normal Ryzen Mobile processors (Last gen H and this zen HS series) which use monolithic design, HX series uses Dual Chiplet based design just like the Desktop Counterparts and needs different degree of tuning for optimizing the Power curve.

It's based on chiplets and has a separate IOD, which increase idle power draw. The intel on the other hand is monolithic but it's battery life is not much better. @henrikg1388
9 ай бұрын
I actually just bought the Intel version of that laptop, but it was basically because it came at an extreme bargain. I currently own a 2021 Ryzen version, of which I am so satisfied that I guess I would go for AMD again, if they only had an offer at the same price. I honestly don't know why I picked up this version now, since it isn't that much better than my current R9 5900HX/RTX3080 16GB. I just felt that the price was so attractive and with 4 years of Premium Care and Accidental damage protection, it will last for that long, and I also get the feeling that price performance ratios will only get worse from now on, and this was the time to strike. Kind of a gut feeling. The Legion 9 is just a sham, and a lousy attempt at market segmentation. For somewhere between double and three times the price, you get very little extra. It's just for people who want to show off, and in that case, why not go for MSI, Asus, Razer or Alienware (MacBook?). Lenovo should fire their marketing department, or maybe I am way off and there are loads of people with loads of money who wants a Lenovo Legion with a fancy metal chassis and Windows Hello. The only negative thing I can say about a Legion 7, is that it doesn't come in a 17" or 18" version. Well, that and that they stripped off some cost-neutral features to make room for the Legion 9. And I must admit that it feels quite stupid to lose 4GB of VRAM which is an obvious bottleneck to come on triple-A titles. That is not Lenovos fault, but why the hell does Nvidia strip down the VRAM between 3080 (Ti) to 4080. It's not exactly where the major cost lies. Oh, how we would need more manufacturers to implement the 7900M to get some competition in the laptop gaming market. I know the 7900M came too late, just as the RX6850M XT did, but hell would we need a range of prime gaming laptops with that combination that could compete with the same performance and the lower price of those components. A full AMD Lenovo Legion 7 and others would really have stirred the market to the benefit of all customers.

Is the 240hz screen in the 7/7i exactly the same 240hz screen in the Pro 5 and 5i? In these reviews, the brightness (500 nits) and color gamut (around 70-75% Adobe RGB) seems to be the same. At the same time, the Slim 7's 240hz screen seems to be a different one which comes in with a bit higher color accuracy/range but slightly lower brightness at around 480 nits.

They are all potentially the same but you have to win the panel lottery as with a lot of these big manufacturers, they usually use 2 to 3 different panel makers per laptop, I have had a boe and csot panel so far but both got over 500 nits and had similar colour gamut

Thx for the comparison. I chose Ryzen version as it eas 600€ cheaper. Is there a risk that the hotter running Ryzen CPU leads to a tjermal throttling of the GPU, especially if you have a 4090 installed? Or is the heat from the CPU kept away from the GPU? And is the Ryzen still limited to PCIE 3.0? I read this in reviews but in the PSREF it says PCIE 4.0.
@MashITTech

wow at 600 difference that's a no brainer. There will be no throttling at all from my experience. At worst you may get a few less watts to the GPU as its giving it to the CPU but I am trying to find software to manipulate the CPU manually and Legion may improve this in a future BIOS too (and its not bad at all but just a little less than the intel version)

It's some issue with dgpu mode. There's massive DPC latency spikes which causes constant microstutter every few seconds. hybrid is alot better but yeah anything that runs at 60 fps the rog ally runs it better cuz the dpc latency is far lower. I averaged about 6ms on the ally vs 60 on the laptop. This is after reinstalling windows multiple times. I thought drivers were getting corrupted or something so hopefully they can fix this issue. Glad I watched this before I bought the Legion AMD. The AMD CPU is clearly better at lower wattage, and should utilize the GPU much better and have better battery life. That's just terrible tuning by Lenovo. No ability to tune the AMD CPU? Shocker. So, lets add it up. Lack of stock tuning, lack of tuning capability, worse battery life, and lastly a lack of auto MUX switch... just unacceptable. These are all easily fixable things. I keep wondering when the clearly superior AMD silicon will get all the bells and whistles that Intel enjoys. That's all I'm looking for. I'll cross it off my list for now. Boo.
@nocommentarygaming2644

I wonder if there's a way to get it to stay at a more efficient clock speed like Intel does or does it always run at 5 Ghz? I will say that the battery life as an inherent disadvantage of Ryzen's dual CCD approach on 12+ cores CPU, so it's not "clearly superior" in every way. Intel's monolithic die results in lower idle power consumption, and you can see this on desktops as well as laptops.
@Blade332
3 ай бұрын
@@nocommentarygaming2644 The same way the 8 core variants have better or at worst on par battery life over the intel counterparts - 1 active CCD. There is clearly a way for windows to utilize only one CCD until needed. It also may be possible to simply turn one of the CCD's off until you need to use it. If tuned correctly, it is superior in every way. There's no reason why watching youtube videos would need to have both CCD's up and active. That said, outside of idle scenarios where the AMD chip use IO dies, AMD is superior... in every way. You also aren't buying these specific AMD chips for battery life, if you wanted that you'd buy the 8 core APU variants that kick the snot out of intel on that front.
@nocommentarygaming2644
3 ай бұрын
@@Blade332 But what if I want high performance and somewhat usable battery life? I can get 8 hours of mostly idle usage on my i9-13900HX laptop but no matter what you do with a 7945HX, you won't get more than 5 (I've never seen a review get higher than 4.5 on idle). So there is certainly a reason for Intel, although it's obviously pretty niche. But yes, AMD is more power efficient because of its superior node, but that will all change with Arrow Lake which is on TSMC 3 nm. Also if there is no sort of Speedshift with Ryzen HX that allows the CPU to downclock to lower frequencies when allowed, that's a major advantage for Intel. Intel is less power efficient but in some scenarios will more efficiently downclock (at least based on what I'm seeing in this video), allowing more power for the GPU.
@Blade332
3 ай бұрын
@@nocommentarygaming2644 I'm gonna need some source(s) on that, as I haven't seen very many tests where that chip got over 5 hours, much less 8. That said if you're doing any sort of work the pendulum once again swings into AMD's favor - chiplet design or not. If you want high performance and usable battery life you still buy an 8 core AMD APU lol. If you want battery life and decent to good performance you *seemingly* buy snapdragon. If you want performance above all, it's AMD again. If you plan on turning your laptop on and not doing anything on it, sure, intel wins there for battery life against AMD's HX line. Also, claiming it's simply a node advantage is pretty disingenuous. Intel uses literally 2x+ the power as Ryzen on desktop depending on workload. That's gonna take more than a node to catch up with. I'm not sure we know if TSMC or Intel is fabbing arrow lake yet do we?
