I agree with you about the plane not really fitting in with the rest of the set, though I imagine that, in play, many children will use the surface of a table to represent the surface of the sea and play underneath with the deep sea elements. I do think it fits well with the rest of the underwater sets though - it it shaping up to be a nice theme. John

+Mike Fawc Officially they describe and display it as an underwater base, they try to make it look sealed, and one of the main premises of the set is oxygen resupply with tanks going from the plane, to the flatbed submersible, down to the base on the seabed.
@mikefawc22
8 жыл бұрын
+JANGBRiCKS oh okay that's cool man I didn't realize they described and displayed it underwater but you can always picture it as what you want which is the best part of it I was seeing it more as a base on the top of the water where they would bring everything up from under the water I'm thinking of building a sea theme using real water so I would have preferred if they made it so the plane could float that would have been cool

I think that its a good idea that each of these sets has some sort of overground vehicle, or its like a lego freight train set with no way of loading/unloading the cargo. I think that maybe they could have just made the plane smaller scale, so it could fit a chest and a pilot but be small.
@MannoMax

I think the "hangar" is meant to be sealed and only open on the bottom wich does actually work. It makes sense in conjunction with the simple door and the crane , since it wouldn't work underwater

The set is a little eclectic, but the play value of the plane on the surface and the rest underwater is a fun way to go. Kids are going to use household furniture for terrain and elevation, so imagine playing at, say, a coffee or dining table - the plane goes on the table top (the ocean surface!), the other stuff is on the floor underneath the table. You have your cargo sled going between the plane and the base to transfer supplies and treasure and research specimens. The set would definitely be improved by more stuff to discover - and a mermaid minifig!

I totally agree, this should have been two separate sets. Usually when you get a bigger set from lego, you get one big structure and a bunch of small structures. And I think that they tried to even it out too much between the base and the plane. I like the plane it looks good, but I felt it took too much away from the base

Hi Jang, I'm looking at this set and I think maybe the base is supposed to be on the surface instead of under water. The base would sit on land and the crane dock would sit over the surface of the water. It has a crane to hoist the submersible up and down, if it were under water the crane is not needed as the submersible can move in 3 dimensions on its own, also, why does the crane need to lift it if it is already on the seabed with the research base. A landing pad is all that is needed. There is also a folded up ladder on the left side of the crane dock. If under water one would swim or float up instead of climb. If the submersible docks under water, apart from imagination, how would the operator get out and into the base without drowning, flooding the submersible, flooding the base and drowning everyone inside. I think the plane acts as a delivery tool and the cargo submersible is used to move things from the base to and from the plane. Anyway, what do you think regarding this idea?
@JANGBRiCKS

Alex S I think that's a really good, logical rationalization. Per LEGO's design, though, the whole thing is actually supposed to be on the bottom of the sea. Check out box art and official description at shop.lego.com (set region to UK) or Brickset.com.

JANGBRiCKS I think that the back section is meant to be open from the bottom but airtight on the sides. Like an old diving helmet. The submersible rises up from underneath into the air filled dock area. It is then taken out of the water by the crane. You just have to imagine that the structure has walls. This would also explain why there is no back wall to the control area as it is one side of the loading dock.

I think that what they were aiming for was for kids to put an air tank in the plane, and then they could fly the plane to where their divers are and drop it off so they could get it with one of the submersibles, then bring it to the base. But that's just what I would do if I was younger and had this set.

I have to say I am a big fan of the new deep sea theme, that said knowing LEGO would follow up the series with a big set to be released mid summer I see this as kind of a dissapointment. With some modifications to the sea base and making additional room in the sea plane the set will fit in nicely but would have prefered to have a large modular underwater base.

I think it would be better if they added an airport for the plane or a ship to land the plane. And i prefere the plane to be smaller then that. Lego could have added a land base foe the land mini figures and added a hatch for the divers in this set. And that crane device is not suitable under water. Thats my taughts to this set.

Would've preferred to have a somewhat larger deep sea base with an air lock instead of the plane. It's a deep sea set, not a plane set, LEGO! Same with the other deep sea set with a ship (which I still plan on getting as I got no ships yet and I love the sunken ship too much). One thing I don't understand is why they make subthemes to the city themes, instead of having them be their own theme. There's not much of a connection between DEEP SEA and CITY, is there? Unless... they made a deep sea city... I'd like that.

i'm not sure the intension of the base-build is to be submerged. i think its meant to be a floating section or else why would it need a crane to hoist something within the water? its meant to hoist it out of the water right? then the sub driver/pilot can exit above water or is lego supposed to assume the sub pilot exits into the water?? bit confused by this. i think it floats above the surface to retrieve items from the sea plane and hoist out the subs, its meant to be underneath surely? but yes i agree, it should be split into 2 sets - one for the sea plane and one for the base. too expensive other wise.
