@@owene2530I mean it’s just small and underwhelming, no dice? The mini figs are pretty generic, which I guess is the point. Too many pieces are put into a dragon that ultimately looks meh and the dragon itself is too big for the landscape or the landscape is too small for the dragon whichever way you want to take that. It’s “modular” but there’s not really a lot of customization that can be done with that given the nature of the shaping the build has. And with it being modular the way it is they could’ve just as easily made 5 or so $30-120 dollar sets, made it a full on lego theme and it would have sold much better but as I see it this is just another hulkbuster
@ladyflimflam

@@BurstanStudiosThat’s the real issue. Instead of issuing this as a theme with marketing explaining that you want everything if you want to play their campaign they have given people a take it or leave it choice. A reason you could justify the price is the fact that this set isn't just a Lego set. It's a full-on D&D one-shot campaign. I think the set is just a big let down from the original design. Instead of a more unique, larger, and detailed dark green dragon that wraps his body around the tower, there's just the most generic, bright red, four legged dragon that can only wrap his tail partly around it. The tower itself looks worse and doesn't blend into the terrain as well, the bridge to the side tower became as basic as humanly possible instead of being uniquely shaped. The Inn's roof is a more cartoony color, and the Inn itself is shrunken down and loses most of it's detail and visual appeal from the outside, looking more like a tall shack now than an Inn. The cave underneath the tower has most of the rockwork around the side completely gone and made more bare-bones, not even resembling a cave well anymore. Even something as simple as the beholder is made into a goofier design, with a pastel purple color that makes him look like he spent too much time in the sun, rather than the deeper purple. And then it's $360. I would've gladly paid $400 for a larger version more like the original, but all these factors make me not even sure if I'll get the set anymore.

This should have been priced at 300 at most. Here is the thing. A lot of these really big expensive sets get a 50 euro discount at some point. This tells me that Lego knows the sets are overpriced. So if you look at the price without the 50 euro discount, then you end up with 310 euro. 310 euro is somewhat acceptable, but it should have been without stickers at that point. I really enjoyed your review of the D&D set, but I humbly disagree with the pricing critique. While $360 might seem high, I believe sets like this one, with its incredible level of detail and narrative potential, deserve a bit more appreciation. For instance, comparing it to the AT-AT, which is a huge vehicle with a relatively simple interior, the D&D set offers far more in terms of storytelling and hidden surprises. Every step in the build felt like uncovering part of a bigger adventure, much like with the Rivendell set, but even more interactive in some ways. I also want to mention that, unfortunately, we don’t get the same experience here in Brazil. Not only do we pay a significantly higher price (about $643.08 or BRL 3600), but we also miss out on bonuses like "The Red Dragon’s Tale" magazine and the mimic gift, which weren’t released here. We just get the box, and that’s it. I know pricing issues in Brazil don’t matter much to people abroad, but I just wanted to point out how lucky you are to enjoy sets without such barriers.

As a huge dnd fan, I believe there were small nods to things like magic items (the cloak on the skeleton, the green dagger, the book- to name a few), and all these things weren’t just put there to be Easter eggs- I think they were put there because they believe people may actually want to use this set as terrain/ set piece to an actual dnd session! While it may be a little cramped, you could definitely use this set as a map for PCs to explore- and there’s definitely a story that dungeon masters could piece together. However, while I think they placed more value in the set for dnd fans, seeing it next to other fantasy/ medieval sets I still don’t believe its price tag is worth it! It would’ve been great to have an “encounter” per set, especially to make things more affordable to kids since they are getting into d&d more, thanks to media like Stranger Things, and especially the young adventurer books that they’ve semi-recently released.

Once again, I LOOVE the concept, but the prices are so extraordinarily out of reach... Just the LEGO experience in a nutshell

Awesome you can make your own mimic chest.......i had one, but unfortunately had to trash it because i was moving. I don't think I'll be able to buy another one because it took up too much space and i prefer to travel/ live light. I have a few games and books, and that's about it otherwise i have no need for it.

that displaced beast is recognisable as such from a distance but man is it fugly. would be cool if they came out with a larger more detailed one in the future. i would probably buy that. its honestly one of my favorite monsters in D&D also gelatenous cubes (my other favorite monster) are basically 10x10x10 foot basically invisible cubes of living but uninteligent acidic ooze that wanders the halls of dungeons consuming organic mater. mad wizards and the like will sometimes keep several around to keep their dunegons clean and to gather any magical trinkets that fallen adventurers may have had on them. TL:DR gelatinous cubes are massive and hard to spot dungeon Roombas.

Would they dissolve bones? I'm just wondering if the skull inside the one in this set is accurate or not

@@prons_gaming5083 they take a long time to digest organic mater. the bones would remain for quite some time.

This was a great review. I love the set and it was great comparing it to other sets to see where it fits in.

As a custom builder, I am very particular about what sets I buy these days. Even though I am a huge castle fan. This set does not have enough value for the price.

Totally agree. Also not a D&D player. However I was excited for this set to come out because of the castle/fantasy theme. It’s a cool set, I’m more excited for the customizable mini figures and accessories than anything else. Likely will use the castle and tavern portions just to get fun build ideas. I personally think they should have released a ruined castle like this at well under $200, similar to the Dune set, and left the tavern as a side build as well as buildable creatures as side builds. They need to leave room for a wider fan base to get involved in their themes at different tier levels.

I appreciate that they brick-built the dragon. Though this would be a great time to introduce a tighter higher strength mixel joint like we have with the CCBS, I'd love those for building more dense models.

I think your absolutely correct! I am a dnd fan but 360$ seems a little much. I guess I can always hope they make smaller more affordable sets in the future.

Prices are still holding (at least at B&M retail stores) - I think that even around the $310 ($10 for just about every set over $60 these days) it would be a buy for people who are in to both D&D and Lego. I haven't played in many years but my daughter does and I still have a few different editions of the manuals. Again, at $300 it would be on my list just not at the top. at $360 it moves down several positions on my list.

I must say... it's a talent how the LEGO designers can turn an adult collectable set into a kid's playset...

I think one other thing to mention is that when comparing to those other sets it may look smaller due to the dragon. But I still agree that 360$ is crazy.

Thank you for your honesty on a given review set! I feel like i would love the build and dragon, but since it will be mainly a display set, i agree with you on price. Lego should have budgeted the designers at 250-300 dollars, get the build in, scale the dragon down 20% and reduce it's parts usage, and then fill in the builds external details up to the budget point. All the internal details and easter eggs are great during building, but after that they are memories and lost to all other beholders except the builder. I rather have a cool set for a cool price with less detail, then paying ridiculous much for an overdetailed cool set. Which in this case i have degraded off my must-have list to my fun-to-have list. MIght be that i am from the 80's where Lego did not detail much at all and i learned to love the freedom to create or even just play within the structures Lego thaught us to build.

Fair play to LEGO for ensuring the dragon has 4 legs, as dragons should, and not making it a wyvern with only 2 legs

As a castle and somewhat of a DND fan this is a must buy. But be smart about it. Wait for a 2x point day for your big purchases. I believe this will be sold at other stores like target, Walmart, kohl’s maybe…and wait for sales. It may take awhile for this to go on sale but worth the wait.

The DND Lego theme should've been smaller modular sets released as expansion packs... kinda like Super Mario nowadays.
@hazbinhotel5488

I am going to defend the price on this. 1: all of those modular sections require additional walls, doors, hidden components that require more pieces adding to the cost. I'm guessing the weight in plastic is closer to the other similar priced sets. 2. the characters. every character is custom with custom prints and pieces...that gets expensive because a new mold must be created and that is hard/expensive to scale and distribute globally. 3. You did not mention the side creature/ bad guy builds....there are quite a few of them...if those side guilds (not including the dragon) what would be the price of those alone? 5. This set has way more raster eggs traps etc that I could imagine. I've never played D and D but I feel like with this set I'd just make up my own game to go with it. I feel like you can get way more value out of this set than you would otherwise because it begs you to invest mere time into the set than other similarly sized priced sets..and as a swt..it looks really good. That tavern building i by far the best medieval building lego has produced...so yeah...plus you are still under 10 cents per piece and there are some big pieces included ...i dunno..it all seems justified the me... just my thoughts on the pricing.
