The Battle of the Nek was the one of the worst tragedies of the Gallipoli Campaign.
It was originally conceived as a hammer and anvil attack against the Nek, which was a small bottleneck held by the Ottomans, in order to prevent reinforcements being sent to Chunuk Bair. The 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigade would launch a frontal assault, while the Kiwis attacked the rear of the Turkish frontline. However, on the day of the attack, the Kiwis had failed to break through to the rear of the trench, allowing the Ottomans to concentrate fully on the frontal assault.
In addition, the covering artillery bombardment ended 7 minutes early, allowing the Ottomans to return to their firing positions. The first wave were ordered over the top regardless and were cut down as soon as they left their trench. The second wave followed them two minutes later and were slaughtered before they could get halfway to the Ottoman trench.
Lieutenant Colonel Noel Brazier, commander of the 10th Light Horses, attempted to get the third wave cancelled. However, Commander F.G. Hughes was missing, leaving John Antill as acting commander. Antill did not go to the frontline to assess the situation and insisted that the third wave proceed as planned. Another round of lambs to the slaughter.
Brazier eventually managed to find Hughes who called off the attack, but the wave of an arm was mistaken for the go order, and the final wave charged to their deaths.
The attack had been completely fruitless. Over 50% of the Aussies were either killed or wounded. The Nek had not been captured, allowing the Ottomans to transfer reinforcements to Chunuk Bair, which ultimately sealed the Entente's defeat on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
