8:10 word of warning, the manual focus clutches work in steps. 17mm works well enough for video, but the 12mm has the steps too far apart, making it unusable.

With regards to lens family, I think the 8-18, 10-25, 12-60 28.-4 and 50-100 pan-Leica are in that same family of lenses with the constant aperture of 10-25 being variation. I think they did that because for this range, this is where you generally will want access to a faster lens. You dont often see super fast ultra-wides.Your certainly would love to have fast 24- 50 ranges which this lens does, in fact even at 20mm. I used to have the 8-18 its fantastic. I just recently returned to m43 to shoot with because its so easy and small to carry, But just using some primes and not all of them all the time. Usually just the Laowa 10, the 15 and sometimes the tiny 45 1.7. Other times the 12-32 (very pocketable) and the 15 for lower light, just varies on what’s going on. I just passed on picking up the 12-60 again after playing with it, I just find that I can achieved what I want from the 10 /15 on the wide side and or the 20 or 25 on the middle ranges. Thanks for the video

I've only ever handled [as opposed to use] the 10-25. My most salient memory of that was my surprise at how light it seemed when weighed [no pun intended] against its considerable size. I own the Nokton 25 as well as the Leica 25. I tend to use the latter more because as you note, the Voigtlander is a VERY heavy lens and it is of course fully manual. If you want the really shallow depth of field it's hard to get anything that touches it [although Laowa have just announced something which matches its specs]. It is a bit soft opened right up, but I think the measurements on these things leave aside the impression that is left of the difference between the extreme bokeh vs a subject in sharp focus - and that's sharpness [which is not THAT bad] in contrast. I also have the 16mm Sigma which is quite a bulky lens, but does offer very good subject isolation at its slightly strange 32mm equivalent focal length. The PanaLeica is strong because it's a compact, light lens that again gives decent subject isolation at 50mm equivalent. Clearly all these lenses are only competition for the 10-25 at its outer range. The one significant omission I find in your round up is consideration of the Sigma 18-35 with a speed booster attachment, which I also own. It does have a more limited zoom of around 12.6-24.5mm [thereabouts], but it's also significantly faster [around f1.26 equivalent] and a lot cheaper. I've got the Viltrox rather than a Metabones speed booster, meaning I paid less than half the cost of the 10-25. But even with the very expensive Metabones adapter it would be still significantly less cost. Downsides? It weighs as much as it looks and more. And also, even though ostensibly it does autofocus, it's absolutely awful in that respect and you're better off using it as a manual. Did I say one omission? There's also the option of buying a 35mm format sensor lens [I bought a second hand A7rII] and a decent zoom to go with it. I got my Alpha, plus a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 [yes, losing a fair bit at the wide end, but gaining a fair bit of reach] for about the cost of the 10-25. I also bought a Samyang 18mm f2.8 for buttons. These are also equivalent to about 2/3 stop faster. That makes it lighter, cheaper [yeah with a second hand camera] and offering far more resolution than anything from MfT. In terms of handling my G9 trounces the Sony by a considerable margin [IMO]. Do I have a conclusion from all this? I wish I did - well perhaps that my search for the Holy Grail continues. But the nagging thought persists: It doesn't exist!

Great comment and all completely valid points! I would have loved to go deeper into adapted lenses, other systems, and of course the legendary sigma 18-35 but at the end of the day I had to limit myself to the native MFT glass. The main principal and claim by others was that MFT primes could have the same performance and features for the same or less money and I think my video did a pretty good job of disproving that. The sigma does give this lens a serious run for its money though so that might have to be an upcoming video on why I went with the Leica over sigma.

@@RhettThompsonFilm As you’ll have gathered, I’d already sunk a fair bit into my lens collection (I haven’t mentioned about 2/3 of the Panasonic and Olympus lenses I’ve bought!) If I were setting out without all that stuff covering the same focal range, I’ve little doubt the 10-25 would be a very good choice. I might still be tempted by one or two bits of glass that are faster, but probably not the recent Olympus. Good lenses, but IMO if you’re going for that sort of expense and weight, you’ve probably picked the wrong format. MfT seems to me a sweet spot of compromise between bulk, usability and expense. It also offers some flexibility. The G9 and 18-35 is a big beast- there’s no getting away from that. But if I want something ultra compact and even stealthy, there’s the GM5 and a small prime - or even the ‘Swiss Army’ 14-140. Which is a fantastic option for travelling light. But oh for ‘one ring to rule them all’, eh?

@@chrisklugh Are you really upgrading to full frame?
