This is not an attack on anybody specific nor a campaign against Anetra. This is people wanting their culture preserved and respected. Please do research into a community to gain an understanding as in why it behaves as such, before passing judgment on something that you lack understanding of. This is a community that has years of curation and dedication and culture imbedded deep within it, that was started out of vitriolic homophobia and transphobia from straight black and brown communities, and racism from white lgbt. Leiomy, Aja, etc, are girls who doesn’t want Ballroom and voguing to suddenly merge into drag and it loses its history and important figures. They don’t want it seen as an accessory, to do with as one wishes then discarded when they’re bored of it or consider it no longer trendy. Regardless of Lei’s intentions, those are hers to deal with, but the sentiment still stands.

I understand why ballroom is so protective of their scene, more and more non POC are entering a scene which was originally all black and brown people, but enough is enough. This constant calling out of someone doing a move incorrectly and shaming them for even attempting it is going to put people off from voguing and trying to learn more. People were so upset when Legendary was cancelled, but at the same time, you have legends in the ballroom scene shaming others for attempting to vogue and doing it wrong as if beginners don’t make mistakes. It seems like the ballroom scene wants more exposure, but doesn’t want others partaking in their art which doesn’t do anyone good. I wish we could all just support one another instead of tearing each other down.
@soheesweetheart
Жыл бұрын
It’s about preserving what’s there. Same with how japan was discontent with Memoirs of a Geisha. It misrepresented a significant part of a culture. Ballroom doesn’t want it’s culture and history misrepresented nor lost. And it doesn’t want exposure for fear of misrepresentation. In the end, I think people confuse Legendary for ballroom, and it wanting to breakout into mainstream media. But legendary is not ballroom, it’s a voguing competition. Being that voguing was birthed in ballroom, the competition is set up similar, but the categories consist of voguing. Drag race, despite being made possible by an iconic black Queen, has become palatable to a more white audience, which isn’t inherently bad, but resulted in some in the community feeling comfortable in being racist towards some queens, despite claiming to be fans of the show. Ballroom is not going to put up with that. It was started partly because the white girls exclude the girls of color. In conclusion, people of drag have a lot of misconceptions about ballroom, because they lack proper understanding as to why the culture is such. Anybody is welcome to partake and join the community, but they will have to learn that nothing will overrun nor change the stripes of what’s been carefully curated for generations. Leiomy’s response could be out of genuine passion or bitterness. But I understand the sentiment.

Gate keeping? So cultural appropriate and get mad after criticism 😂😂😂 the ytess ne yting
@blakegillpuente3904
Жыл бұрын
@devinngeorge I think this conversation is going in multiple different directions. Like, yes: calling out appropriation is valid and necessary. Leiomy (and anyone else from ballroom) is justified in calling out Anetra's lifting so much from ballroom. It does still need to be applied evenly though, bc nobody had shit to say about all the times Shangela was dippin everywhere (the first one on Drag Race to do it) or every time Miss Gia Gunn whips out a *crusty* duckwalk and tries to vogue. So, it does feel odd to suddenly pick one person and really apply it heavy on them. But still, the criticism is valid. The point I (and many others) have made though is about the fact that if you watch the trick in question (especially when you watch it in slow-mo) it becomes very clear that it was not no damn 360° dip, nor was that what Anetra tried to do; if you compare it to what she did in the talent show, it's *exactly* the same set-up and follow-through that she did when she spun and kicked the board Bryce was holding. The only difference is that there was no board (or Bryce), and she just followed through to land in a squat and whipped her wig. None of it from start to finish was trying to be a 360 dip, so Leiomy (or anyone) trying to criticize *that* particular skill and call it appropriation *is* a corny attempt at gatekeeping. If she wants to get her for the dip she *did* do, and her noguing and duckwalk- werk! Do it! But you can't just call a trick something it isn't and be right when you try to call it out. That's goofy.

look, i get where leiomy’s coming from even though i don’t feel reacting in that way will really lead to anything. as a 007 in the ballroom scene, i’ve gotten to connect with people in the community who feel this way towards how ballroom has been portrayed time and time again in platforms like rpdr, actually, the majority of people in ballroom scene feel this way. they often feel as though ballroom is paid dust a lot of the time and the fact that it’s getting its flowers when someone like, in this case, Anetra who’s not involved in the ballroom scene is the one getting to have a big audience feels quite dismissive of those who invest in the craft and community. it’s very different from being inspired by voguing (which i personally don’t see as a problem) than for it to become people’s idea of voguing when it’s not.
@yoyodre
Жыл бұрын
I don't feel like this is a fair perspective. Anetra is certainly not responsible for being praised for her style of dance and has not taken credit as vogueing. RPDR is more of a paegentry talent product placement show than anything, so expecting a deep dive or technique tutorial from a show that films two episodes a week in the middle of nowhere is completely unrealistic. Even when ballroom had its own shows, the community had animus with those too. There's nothing stopping vouging drag queens from at least applying to compete. I know Leiomy has said they wouldn't let her guest judge. I couldn't tell if thats true or her saying they wouldn't want her because of what she would say. But if the expectation is they are going to recreate ballroom, i would ask why is that the expectation when it's not a ballroom competition?

We in the queer community praise expression/individuality, but when someone makes a mistake in voguing, people leap at the chance to criticize or belittle them. It’s understandable to find “Noguing” irritating, that part is reasonable, but how can we expect people to take the time to learn the style properly if anyone who is “less than perfect” is publicly laughed at? It is also extremely hard for most people to find access to those in their area, let alone that are beginner friendly. -From someone who’s bipoc, queer, and takes voguing classes

Rupauls Drag Race and many drag queens just try to appropriate our culture without ever getting involved with it, if they just respected us and just started to be present at the cene this issues would not exist, they only do because many Drag Queens just keep their distance from Ballroom at the same time they try to appropriate Ballroom culture. NOT SAYING THAT ABOUT ANITRA BTW. AND I KNOW THERE ARE RU GIRLS FROM BALLROOM IM SPEAKING GENERALLY.
