Would have been a classic commercial if it had ever aired

I Love Len Lye's cinematic films! The Rhythm of this short piece is irresistible! Kinetic, Driving, Kinesthetic Movement, Exciting Rhythmic Cinema at its Best! Sensational & Timeless!!

First saw this movie as part of a Len Lye retrospective the Museum of Modern Art Film Department organized in 1981. Never forgot it. The jump cuts timed to the rhythm of the soundtrack have become a standard part of the modern editing toolkit, but when I saw the movie in '81 they seemed new and thrilling -- even though Lye made the movie back in 1957.

“rhythm” from 1957 is a piramidallic piece of artwork of the fifties. I remember, we got it screened with the film class by peter kubelka in vienna in the framework: “100 jahre filmisches denken” at kapuzinergraben in 2000 I guess. I’d never forget the first work of lye commissioned by the royal uk army, how to ferret and ambush and kill as an infantry soldier as many enemy troops as u can. I’d be glad founding this footage somewhere again. I never saw since such an astonishing piece of war dramatizing educational film as it was made by lye.

I find this hard to believe that this is a work by Len Lye. The editing is to clean and feels to modern.

@section75 You're selling the past short! It's mentioned in Len Lye: A Biography.

Len Lye is my favorite abstract animator, more than Oskar or Norman!

I agree! While Norman McLaren & Oskar Fischinger are also great & legendary, I'd have to say Len Lye was even more amazing & brilliant! Len Lye was a huge influence on Norman McLaren & many other wonderful cinematic kinetic movie makers such as Slavko Vorkapich, Geoffrey Jones, & Andrew Noren!

It is though: Chrysler commissioned Len Lye to make a short promotional film, but rejected this completed movie because it was too abstract.

You're right Martina, Rhytmus 21 i.e. folksonomy.co/?permalink=1845 was created by Hans Richter, however this film called "Rhythm" is by Len Lye - see: hcl.harvard.edu/hfa/films/2007novedec/lye.html (as rightly pointed out by Dannon below).
