The American boxing media hated Lewis because he beat the shit out of pretty much all their guys
@harveypratt995

True, I believe it was literally about 100 years since a non-American held the belt/s. As for me being American I don't care. I just want to see the best fighter, no matter where they come from. That makes me a fan of boxing. In America, I believe it really comes down to marketing and money. Those involved in the sport/industry seem to think American champions are more marketable and profitable. Though, in recent years the UFC seems to be making that an outdated idea.

@@sedth8 I agree the rematch with McCall was bizarre. As for Tyson it always comes down to "prime Tyson." He was prime when Douglas kicked his ass and knocked him out. He was younger than Lewis when he got knocked out. Tyson was one of the most exciting fighters ever. Because he had devastating ko power. He's not the GOAT or even the best of his era. As for Lewis, he punched as hard as Tyson. He relied on his boxing first to set up the Ko.

*For people that don't know history* . *Read the following, then rethink all of your comments* : - 1985 Tyson begins his pro career - 1986 Tyson wins WBC heavyweight title - 1987 Tyson wins WBA and IBF heavyweight titles (undisputed champ) *- 1988 Lewis wins gold at the Olympics as an amateur* - 1989 Lewis BEGINS his pro career (note the word "begins") - 1990 Tyson is knocked out by Buster Douglas - 1991 Tyson goes to JAIL - 1993 Lewis wins WBC heavyweight title - 1994 Lewis is knocked out by Oliver McCall - 1995 Tyson is out of jail and resumes his boxing career - 1995 Lewis wins IBC heavyweight title *- 1996 Tyson wins WBC and WBA heavyweight titles* *- 1997 Lewis wins WBC heavyweight title -- FROM MIKE TYSON* - 1999 Lewis wins WBA and IBF heavyweight titles (undisputed champ) Key points are in bold text. Read. Process. Digest. Then read it again. History has a funny way of not sinking in for some people. When Tyson was undisputed champion in 1987, Lewis had a professional record of 0-0 and was preparing to face Riddick Bowe in the upcoming Olympics in 1988. Think. Process. Digest. By the time Tyson lost to Douglas in 1990, Lewis was not in the top 10 ranked fighters yet. How would Lewis earn a title shot against the champion when he wasn't ranked in the top 10 yet? Hmmm.... Process. Read. Digest. When Tyson went to jail (his own damn fault), Lewis won his first heavyweight title. It's Tyson's fault for losing to Douglas. It's Tyson's fault for going to jail. TYSON missed Lennox Lewis, NOT the other way around. When Tyson came out of jail and won the WBC title, isn't it interesting that Lewis has it the very next year. Hmmm. How did Tyson's WBC title wind up around Lennox Lewis's waist? Read. Process. Digest. Tyson GAVE UP HIS TITLE rather than fight Lewis. Again, Tyson avoiding Lewis, NOT the other way around. All this talk about prime, did anyone hear what Lewis said himself in the fight? Or what the commentators said? The truth is that Lewis was still in his prime here like he said himself, "like a fine wine that comes around late" and Tyson was pretty washed up in this stage of his career! Like the commentators said, Tyson's boxingstile is very demanding, you have to know this, Tyson were a very physical fighter while Lewis was more of an technical and a smart boxer, not so physical demanding style of boxing so he can box and stay in his prime much longer than a boxer like Mike can! Just go back and see old boxing matches with Mike, it's like two different boxers and then go watch Lewis back in the day, he just got better with time, when you are a technical boxer and less physical boxer you get only better with time because you can refine your technique with time but when you box like Mike, based on pure power/speed and physical boxing you usually get washed up waaaay faster with age like the commentators said in the fight! How would a Prime Tyson take on Lewis here? We will never know but it would be a whole different boxing match, i can promise you that 😉

I know they're similar ages, but different styles and fighters age differently, everybody knows that. Tyson's style was dependent on speed, youth; Lewis' style was not. The Tyson Lewis beat was a nobody. Danny Williams KO'd this Tyson ffs. You deserve no credit Lewis. If Lewis fought Tyson of 88... forget about it. I don't disrespect Lewis to say he'd get easily destroyed - he's of course still an absolute world class, all-time fighter. But I do believe he would have been beaten and probably KO'd. Joe Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis were experts at picking opponents at the right time but no one complains about them. Calzaghe had a very unimpressive career, and the only big names on his resume came against men who were well past their prime. Bernard Hopkin, Nigel Benn, Steve Colin's, Chris Eubank, Roy Jones, Robin Reid.. Etc...Calzaghe went on to defend his belt against the likes of Omar Sheika, Mario Veit, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, Kabary Salem, and Evans Ashira. None of these opponents ever came remotely close in their career to being a top-level fighter. Lewis will most likely go down as one of the most intelligent, calculated champions ever. Lennox was able to capitalize on Tyson's jail term to reign as champion, then got out before the Klitchko brothers could undo the legacy he has manufactured for himself. He stayed an extra 4 years as an amateur to win a gold metal against younger opponents (Riddick Bowe for the medal bout). He then became champion only because Bowe gave up the title. He backed out of Tyson's way (accepting a huge multi-million dollar payoff from Don King as payment for Tyson taking his ranking) as he was climbing back up to regain the championship that was handed to him. I believe that history will judge him for the fake that he truly is.

Lot of misinformation. Lennox never ducked anyone. Everyone avoided Lennox because they knew how good he was. Tyson never wanted to fight Lennox at any part of his career. He had to because of his contract. His style was made for a master pugilist like Lennox. He beat Vitali before retirement. He wanted the rematch but his wife threatened him with divorce if he boxed again. At that point, he had proved everything there was to prove. Bowe's camp told him to vacate the belt because they knew Lewis was better. Bowe lost to Golota. Go and watch what Lennox did to Golota. On the contrary, history recognizes Lennox as one of the best heavyweights ever in boxing. He is more appreciated now than when he was active.

@@mattg8600 Lmao so going your way of thinking imagine what a beast tyson could be at 30y if he train well and be focus like with Cus and Rooney, the geatest ever. Even without that happen, people still know who was best boxer ever. Sound crazy isnt it ? And no lewis wasnt a kid during spar with tyson, he already won american junios championships and was a badass kid.... till he faced tyson ofc real GOAT of box

RaPMeN No offence but you’re a little incoherent but Tyson wasn’t the best boxer ever and virtually everyone agrees with that. Tyson fought poor opposition during his prime, knocking out an old Holmes and a natural 180lb Spinks. Also he was a kid when he sparred with Tyson, Lewis is like 10 months older and they were both teenagers making Lewis a kid.

You're talking as if prime Tyson was a god among men. Prime Tyson couldn't put away 4 lower class contenders.

What has age got to do with prime? Mike was world champion in 1986... the Tyson Lewis fight happend in 2002... everyone knows Lewis got better with age whereas Mike had done it all and struggled with mental health and other issues. Still the youngest heavyweight champion ever tho 🥊
