Bruno had a glass chin, that was the problem. There were warning signs early in his career when he got caught by a journeyman heavyweight called Jumbo Cummings, which rocked him - later, those concerns were confirmed when James Bonecrusher Smith knocked him out in the last round with Bruno miles ahead on the judges' scorecards. Frank had the biggest punch in world boxing - no doubt about that - but he couldn't take heavy punishment and that was his downfall in every fight he lost. He was brave, but his chin's strength didn't match the bravery.

Bruno was sensational in this fight. Most underrated fighter of all time. Heart of a lion. Literally the whole fight turned around on one big punch. Shame for Frank but credit to Lewis for his comeback too. Frank was awesome and the crowd was with him. He deserves far more recognition. He was on TV in his 60's saying he was still in such great shape he'd love to get back in the ring. He's still monster strong! This was in his own words the toughest fight of Lennox's career. Lennox straight up praised Frank for being so effective. Frank may have lost but this was his best fight.. tragic he got caught. Frank in this form would have flattened AJ. Fast powerful jabs followed through with big hooks with sustained hard pace for 6 rounds walking Lennox down. Superb fight.

His success in terms of how well he did against Lewis was purely down to the reality that styles make fights, Bruno's style and abilities were quite simply a good mesh to fit into and get through this version of Lennox abilities and style, Mercer was more of a threat to Lewis as he was more dangerous to Lewis during his prime as his style meshed with that version of Lewis well. Lennox became champ outside of his prime multiple times, he is ultimately the only contender from this era for the title of Goat
@donavonhoward114
Жыл бұрын
In some parallel reality, Frank Bruno beats Lewis, Tyson, Riddick Bowe, and Evander Holyfield. That's how good Frank Bruno really was. He could have done all of that. It's just that each fight has it's own story, and Bruno was usually on the wrong end of the outcome against the most legendary fighters of his era. He had the talent, and he had the skill to beat any of those guys on any given night. It just wasn't in the cards. Unfortunately, in all sports, great athletes, great teams, great coaches, and great fighters sometimes get overlooked because they lose against other greats of the era. There is only one winner in each fight. It's the unfortunate reality of competition through the eyes of fans, and experts alike. People usually only care about the winner, and they don't even consider the loser until long after the fact. It's always going to be "what have you done for me lately" when a fighter is still active. Only after a guys career is over is when some people will look back on what actually took place. A lot of times, a fighters greatness is about more than just the accolades themselves. Regardless, Frank Bruno was deservedly a champion, and a top contender in the late 80's, and 90's, and he was special. It's crazy to think about how stacked the 90's heavyweight division was at the time. If guys like Bruno, Morrison, Mercer, Golota, Tua, Moorer, Mavrovic, and Mccall, had fought in their primes during the mid to late 2,000's, and early 2010's, I think they would have done even more. The 90's were so competitive from top to bottom at heavyweight. Even the Klitschko's couldn't break through until Lennox, Holyfield, and Tyson were long gone.

Lewis duffed him up right and proper, though; he was never the same after that and Tyson got him TKO in three rounds in their second bout together after that Lewis fight (it was TKO:5 the first time they fought). Even in that second fight, Bruno still somehow managed to get to his feet and was only finished by way of technical knockout. He’s never suffered a “full” knockout in his career. Many comments claim that Bruno had no chin, but that's not the case. Every fighter that beat him was a word champion, yet none of them knocked him clean out - including Tyson twice. Just watch any of his losses and see how many solid shots he would take, yet still wouldn't go down The real problem was lack of natural movement and the lack of natural instinct to hold, tie up his opponent or take a count like you would see in Benn, Mcguigan, Lewis, Holyfield..... He even had dancing lessons to try and improve his rhythm! The stamina was as much to do with the nervous energy that Frank could never shake - the fear always overwhelmed him. That said. He was one of my favourite fighters, because despite his limitations, he showed guts, dedication, and discipline whilst always behaving in in a decent manner.

Remember, Lewis was established at the top by this time. And is now classed as one of the greatest heavyweights. Bruno was brilliant in this fight if he would’ve learned to go down on a knee to recover, he may have been much better. But his courage and pride kept him standing up for most of his stoppages. Bruno went in with Tyson twice so I recon that's brave and he didn't shy away from any of the elite like today's boxers. The majority of boxers hit behind the head on the blind side of the ref, yes its wrong but all do it. Steward believed in him, he saw the untapped potential. Just tied up some loose ends, got him to move his head a bit, get in, get out, don't get caught. He was a good fighter.
Steward had the ability to see the potential in most of his fighters and just seemed to tweak their style, even though Lennox and the Klitsckho brothers for example were already great. I do like that Kronk style though. Look how aggressive Fury was against Wilder. First time I've seen Fury brawl like that in a long time but he did it with perfection.

You know I have to say one thing about Frank Bruno. I would comment that he wasn't such a good fighter in the past. The man that guy has the heart of a Lion he never goes down no matter what you hit him with. Not to mention Lewis fought and beat all the world champions and top contenders in their prime during his career.. Tommy Morrison.. holyfield.. Klitschko... Bruno... Galota... Shannon Briggs.. Ray Mercer.. buster Douglas.. he even beat riddick bowe for the gold medal at the Olympic games and that was enough for bowe to refuse to face him again. How many great fighters in their prime did tyson face and beat during his career?
@P00fta

@@michaeljagger2079 Yes Lewis did great throughout his boxing career and dominated the game during his prime, but you also have to look at the factors which played a major role regarding the loss of Tyson against Lewis. But to be honest, I did mention that Tyson was out of his prime but now thinking about this more clearly and thourougly, I strongly believe that there really was no prime for Tyson. Although Tyson was never the same during the ages 23-24, due to prison, partying/clubbing and minimal training sessions which contributed a hell lot to his performance. Mike had lost himself before he even lost to Douglas, especially with the loss of Cus and also fired Kevin Rooney. He really wasn't himself afterwards. Lewis even mentioned in an interview that the Tyson he went up against was not the same as before.

Tyson also came to his peak sooner because he looked like a "Man" physically by 15, and had a great supporting cast: D'Amato was a library of knowledge of boxing and psychology of fighting; Cayton and Jacobs (who had a strong personality and Champion in his own right in his sport, hand-ball) supplied a boxing library of footage as well as the FINANCES that helped get Pro Sparring Partners to train with a young/teenage Tyson. That's huge. Training with Pros only gets you better quicker.

@@ericgeorge5483 completely agree, like AJ his shoulders were too big to have a successful defence. Very static boxer with only 7-8 rounds of stamina, although he was supposed to have the most concussive one punch shot of his era. I tried to be totally neutral when watching this fight; but in summation I have to say that Frank made Lennox look pretty ordinary throughout. Until Frank got caught with that left hook in round 7 he had earned a well-deserved points lead over his opponent. It would have been the right thing to do for Lennox to have said that he got lucky instead of mentioning the cold temperatures, taking time to warm up and losing his footing etc. Ok, maybe Frank may have run out of gas in the closing stages; who knows. But up until he got caught he was doing admirably. People also like to mention his susceptible jaw but he took a good punch from Lennox and still didn't go down.
