May 10th, 1996. Former Olympic Gold Medalists Lennox Lewis aka “The Lion” and “Merciless” Ray Mercer collided in a Heavyweight 10 rounder.
Prefight records; Lewis 28(24)-1, Mercer 23(15)-3-1.
Entering the fight, Mercer had wins over top oppositions such as Bert Cooper, Francesco Damiani & Tommy Morrison while Lewis had notable victories over the likes of Lionel Butler, Phil Jackson, Mike Weaver, Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, Frank Bruno, Gary Mason, Donovan Ruddock & Tommy Morrison.
Overall, it was a spectacular action packed slugfest by 2 hard hitters inside a 16’ x 16’ ring with many powerful exchanges resulting in many close and competitive rounds.
After 30 minutes of Heavyweight explosion, Lewis won via MD10 with scores of 96-94, 96-95 & 95-95.
The late Harold Lederman had it 95-95.
Despite the loss, Mercer won a great deal of respect as he put up one of the best performances of his career.
In the undercard, future Lewis opponents Evander Holyfield and Michael Grant won their bouts via RTD5 and TKO4 respectively.
This was supposed to be a tune-up for Lewis in preparation for his showdown against Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe which did not take place due to the tragic and controversial conclusions of Bowe’s bouts against the relatively unknown Andrew Golota in July and December of 1996.
Instead, Lewis took on Oliver McCall in a rematch for the vacant WBC Heavyweight Championship in February 1997.
Note: Both met for the 1st time back in September 1994 where Lewis who was the 5.5-1 betting favorite was shockingly upset via TKO2 and lost his WBC Heavyweight Title.
In one of the most bizarre outcomes in the history of world title fights, referee Mills Lane had to wave off the bout due to McCall’s breakdown during the fight after he refused to throw punches for a number of rounds as he was suffering from symptoms of drug withdrawal.
As such, Lennox Lewis became WBC Heavyweight Champion for the 2nd time via TKO5 and the only man to have scored a stoppage win over Oliver McCall.
