LENNY APPELSAMY NAIDOO
A familiar face and voice at cultural events is Lenny Appelsamy. A gentleman passionate about the Andhra culture and language, Lenny has made his mark in the South African Indian music fraternity.
He has served the cause of music, arts and culture with distinction in a musical career that spans over four decades, with several “firsts”. His love for the arts and culture is complemented by the fact that he serves as Principal Cultural Officer in the KZN Department of Arts and Culture.
Lenny Naidoo is passionate about the upliftment of traditional music as well as other genres of music, so much so, that he performs regularly in the classical, devotional, traditional and contemporary styles. He has also had the distinction of performing as principal artiste at the prestigious Swami Thyagaraja Music Festival. Lenny has also been a regular participant in the Annual Carnatic Music Concerts organised by the International Centre for Performing Arts in South Africa.
Thus far he has produced and recorded 4CDs in the Telugu Language,viz.Madhura Gaanam,Govinda Murari, Jaabilamma and Entho Chakkani Dhevudu and two others in the Tamil language. A copy of the album”Unakkulle Naan Ennakulle Nee” in which he also performed was received personally by Bhagwan Shree Satya Sai Baba.
Lenny has had the distinction of performing with the KZN Youth Wind Band and also with members of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served as a presenter on community radio, Radio Phoenix and Radio 1860.
Apart from his television appearance, multitalented Lenny has also featured in several TV commercials, stills adverts and bit roles in movies such as Mr Bones 2, Florida Road,etc. He serves voluntarily on the adjudication panels of both the Telugu and Tamil Eisteddfods conducted by the Andhra Maha Sabha of SA and SA Tamil Federation/KZNTVS, for over 25 years. His involvement in and his love for music has seen him performing with almost all the popular Indian bands / Orchestras in KZN, both North and South. He has rendered performances on stages and in auditoriums from Durban, Gauteng, Port Elizabeth locally, to venues in Taiwan and Mauritius. Lenny has had the distinction of compering an overseas concert featuring TMS Selvakumar,V Ghantasala,LR Eswari, Jamuna Rani and others. He has also shared the stage with prominent overseas artistes such as Unni Menon,Usha,etc. His passion for music includes Carnatic,Hindustani classical, Folk,Contempiorary and other genres. A highlight of his career was winning the South African Traditional Music Achievement (SATMA) Awards ceremony which was held at the ICC in Durban on 30 September 2006.
