Leo used to perform this regularly in his Minnesota coffeehouse sets in the 1960s. Then one night he told the audience he wouldn't do any more Dylan tunes, at least for a while. "I'll go back to doing his stuff when he starts doing some of mine." I'm not sure he stuck to that.

This *sigh* masterpiece along with Eight Miles High are my favorite covers by Mr. Kottke. I've seen him perform a couple of times over the years, first in the early 90's. In a tiny club, half full and I was within a few feet of him. I watched his hands in awe. One man sounds like 3 amazing players! I adore his voice and humorous banter, too, no matter his distaste for it! This is a soulful, beautiful one. 🤍

I was looking for "Circle Round the Sun" and after I listened to it, good ol' KZitem suggested this song. Have only heard Bob Dylan sing it before. This so so beautiful, it touches me deeply. Thank you so much for posting!!

Growing up around Vancouver,back in the late sixties Tom Northcott did a version of this tune that originally turned me on to it.I'm forever grateful.

I, too, loved Tom Northcott's version. For me, still the best, but Leo does absolutely great too. Northcott also did The Rainmaker, a Harry Nielson song, which I loved.

I was turned on to Kottke way back in 1971 or so and was lucky to have seen him backing up Logins and Messina not long after. dude is amazing and he's just gotten better with time. Never heard his version of this until now, tho. Stephen Stills also does a damn good cover as does Pete Townsend.

Leo's such a great artist. He changed the landscape of the six & twelve string guitar. Set the bar high many decades ago. He's 72 years old now & is coming to town on Wednesday!

Live At the No Exit Coffee House I think is the name of this recording...it's like 1969 or something, really early and awesome. This was the best track, and right before it Leo says, "The No Exit is obviously loosing money tonight. Here's a song by Bob Dylan."

The melody is very old but Dylan could turn a musical phrase like no other. Add that to probably the premere acoustic guitarist in - like - ever, bliss! Thanks for posting.

If you can even begin to cover Leo's work I am impressed. I goof around on guitar, know a few chords and do a little tiny bit of fingerpicking, but I can never approach even covering a song like this. But I sure wish I could play like this!
@Muzicutevechi

I fully agree to this! And not only because of his gitar playing, which is far over the original, but even for his singing. Of course, a matter of personal taste, some people would think differently, OK.

I think Leo has always been more comfortable playing guitar than singing. He has that famous humorous quote about his voice. But some songs suit him better than others. I think especially about Louise, Pretty Pamela Brown, Julie's House and Girl From the North Country. Of them, I think the other three best represent his sweet spot as a vocalist, but his rendition of this song is powerful and appealing.
