One in particular was Elton John. Elton adored him. A few years ago Elton collaborated with him on an album. There are some stories about that in which Leon thanks him for "pulling him out of life's ditch" or something to that effect. Leon was truly special. If you listen to much of the early Elton stuff (pre-1975) you can really hear the "Leon" influence in a lot of it - particularly on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

@@hankstuddard23 Yes! Leon and Elton were hitting at the same time, and were mutual fans of each other. Elton considered Leon one his idols, and Leon was in Elton’s audience when he first cane to America and played the Trubador in LA. They became friends and worked on and off with each other for many years after.
Jamel, this reaction to Leon Russell, Tightrope, touched my soul. This is the music of my youth and takes me back to my true self. I was 17 years old and pregnant when this song came out and I was on a tightrope. I had three options and all felt like they could be the wrong choice to me. But I raised my son and that is the best choice I have ever made in my life. I just wish my son and grandsons could appreciate how much this music of the 60’s and 70’s are my soul. The music which is by the way the soundtrack to my whole life it seems. It's very powerful stuff. which really have no words sufficient enough to explain. It's like we, the older generation have a secret we are dying to tell, and its all in the music. Like when you are dying for someone to open a gift you've given them, it's all that and more. All this music is really the gift that keeps on giving. It's just a joy to see your reactions, so thank you for that, and keep on feeling the music. :)

I think the flip side of the single was "Out in The Woods" which you should definitely try out. Leon tells the story of the song on his "Leon Live" album, but the gist of it was that when he was writing the song he asked an African friend of his if he could tell Leon what the Zulu translation would be for being 'lost in the woods or jungle. Leon wanted to find a way to use some of the Zulu words in his song. His friend just laughed and said,"Zulus don't get lost in the jungle, they have no words for that." So according to Leon, the words at the end of the song, translated from Zulu would be roughly, "I'm a man gone crazy, wandering around out here in the jungle without a purpose." Please enjoy! kzitem.info/news/bejne/s41smICGcpNmjJg

Love this! Leon is from my hometown of Tulsa Ok. We saw him at a Trombone Shorty show in the audience just a few weeks before he passed on. He was a local legend and a huge part of The Tulsa Sound. His studio was an old church and it is being refurbished for recording again. It’s called The Church Studio. Would love to see more of him on your show. 💖

One of the best arrangers' ever. Not to mention pianist and writer also. React to Leon's " A Song For You".

Hello again Jamel, been listening to piano man Leon Russell since the 60s. Would try and catch him when he came around live with friends. Not only was he a great musician, he was a great lyricist. He wrote one of the best ballads ever written and a favorite of mine ‘A Song For You’ which has been covered by everybody. He graduated from high school in Oklahoma with David Gates of the band Bread and Miss America Anita Bryant. A little trivia. The following link is to a PBS special from 1970 of Leon Russell and friends which was the first stereo recorded broadcast. They filmed six hours of music and reduced it to an hour for the PBS special. Enjoy and watch Leon sing n tickle the ivories. Keep good music alive. BTW love the teal batik shirt. kzitem.info/news/bejne/lZits6Wion6JjYY

Leon Russell was a top session player on all kinds of instruments for years. He played with all of the very best, and made them better. This album was named Carney, and the whole thing was about being a Carney, an entertainer. Great album by a great artist. One of the all time best. Thanks for featuring him. RIP Leon.

A great live album with Joe Cocker and Leon Russell is Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Songs include: Cry Me a River, Delta Lady which was written by Leon. Another song on the album is Superstar which is sung by Rita Coolidge. I know you did a reaction of Superstar by Karen Carpenter but the version by Rita is just as great.

RIP. Also, he went on tour with Elton. Elton helped him up when he was down. Love ‘Back To The Island’ and Lady Blue. I saw him about 10 years ago. Awesome.

This is the song and album that started me on my life long love of Leon Russell. This man could write a song like no one else, everything from deep meaningful songs to rockers ike "Tulsa Turnaround".

Jamel you must get so tired of us oldsters saying, "Wow, this brings back memories" -- but these throwback songs really do. This was my junior-senior year in high school, sets the whole mood of '72. Just laid back, wearing those bell-bottom jeans and cutting class, lying around on the school lawn with friends. The circus feel can also be heard in Three Dog Night's "Show Must Go On," a couple of years later. Was all we could do, with the war and all the craziness going on. kzitem.info/news/bejne/2ap30q6lmKKirKg

"Delta Lady" and "A song for you." This man was a studio musician at the age of 16. He was that great of a piano player. He played on everyone's records from the Beatles to Elvis Presley. Country artists and Rock and roll Bands alike, all knew and wanted Leon Russel to play the piano parts on their albums in the studio. Dirt poor as a kid in Oklahoma, he used to go down to the Black part of town and listen to BB King, and Muddy Waters etc. One time they let him sit in, and that was that. The secret of the 16 year old poor kid, was out. Please do more of Leon. Sadly he passed a few years ago. Elton John found this aged, long haired old man living under a Bridge, and dying. Elton had known Leon from 4 decades earlier, and the 2 being great piano playing artists, were admirers of one another. Elton took this once world famous artist, and got him some help and both men being Christians, did a lot of praying to the Lord. Leon was soon after inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He died shortly after. If you Google Leon Russell induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You see this, and cry, along with everyone in the audience, and even plain folks like me. I cried like a baby. Thank you

Leon Russell is one of many, many great musicians who cut records at the world famous Muscle Shoals studio. It was Leon's manager (I forget his name) who came up with the nickname "Swampers" for the studio's band.
