Brezhnev died on November 10, 1982, only three days after the Nov 7 revolution military parade. The weather on Nov 7, 1982 was clear, but bitterly cold, and Brezhnev stood out in it for around an hour. This probably helped cause his death three days later.

The cracks in the Soviet system began to show under Brezhnev. The economy had begun to stagnate and you could see the Soviet Union's days were numbered. Nice formations, though. Like to see the Russians march.

No. That students of military academies, cadets of military schools - all excellent pupils. Also in the parade is usually attended by Marine units, airborne troops and Interior Ministry. And go marched on Red Square is not "Their only TASK" and giving them the right to honor for distinguished service / education. Drill training is a mandatory part of their education.

@SouthwesternEagle Good historical analogy! Yes, in 1841 Harrison stood out in the freezing cold and delivered the longest US presidential inaugural address in history, around 2 hours. He caught pneumonia and died a few weeks later as a result. Brezhnev probably would have died anyway, but being at the 1982 parade no doubt hastened his demise.

Well Stalin tried to build Socialism, but on Human bones. He began the first five year plan in 1928 to turn USSR from agricultural to industrial state. It ended with famine in Ukraine, Southern Russia and Northern Khazakhstan which happened in 1932-1933.

Been there, seen it. Heard it. Stood there. Adc to the Norwegian Crown Prince then. On my right hand side stood Fidel Castro. With his beard blowing in the wind. And next to him Nicolau Cauchescu from Romania. Thoght by myself. What is a small rural boy from Norway doing here. On the prominent stand? But I knew of course that it was not me, but the Crown Prince that mattered.

The Militia in Stalin's time was becoming just another Bourgeois police force. Kruschev dissolved the all-Union MVD and gave control of the Militias to the Republics. This was more in tune with Lenin's Militia Programme than Stalin's time.

Sorry for my bad Russian! I´ll improve it. Salut from me in Berlin to all of You comrades!

In the end, he accepted appalling terms that humiliated his own country, destroyed his own political career, and led to his deposition from the Soviet leadership not long afterward. However, he did so while also managing to save Cuba, extracting a promise from the US government never to invade it.

Khrushchev, was a great leader. He wanted to defend the Soviet Union and Cuba, so he put missiles in Cuba to even the nuclear playing field and reduce the likelihood of the US launching a first strike against the USSR or invading Cuba. Once he realized what a dangerous nutjob(Kennedy) he was dealing with, however, he put concern for the fate of humanity above all other considerations and began frantically trying to find a way to defuse the crisis before Kennedy went and started a war.

imo, the communism's digma was too idealistic, too untested, too much boastfull. the soviet union collapsed under the weight of that. marx did not have a concreted idea about how a socialist society would be organised. lenin looked at war time economy of germany and thought of using it. so the soviet system is essntially war time capitalist economy. if i were a soviet leader, i would slowly distance my self from marxism-leninsm, like china.

I remember Garrick Utley saying that the Soviets wanted to convey a different tune to George Schultz, representing the US as our Secry of State. to which Schultz said in his typical understated way, "Yeah, no kidding with that march just after they buried him, Different tune alright." Looks like Putin's playing his own tunes in Syria. Pretty soon they'll be funeral dirges for lots of Ivans and Ivanas. Give the rebels time and they'll figure out the neo-Romanovs under Putin just like they did their Soviet grandfathers in Afghanistan.
