small tip: panda crab like to be half-submerged. so in my opinion 30% land 40 % shallow water 30% water is best setting for the panda crab. well if you use 30x30x30 then you won't have any space for it but if you use larger tank it's good to have shallow water part in your panda crab tank. about 1~3 cm deep

Good tip this would be easy to do with some well positioned rocks and wood.

Yo, this legit looks like somewhere I would want to live if I were a crab. I have a few questions about the pump, though. • How is it powered? • How do you properly set up a filter or pump for a low water level Paludarium? • How do you clean it? • Where can I get one? If you can’t answer all of them, that’s totally fine. The beauty of this setup makes up for it.

The pump is linked in the description you can probably find similar types just about anywhere. It's pretty standard and plugs into the power socket like any other. I just run the cord out a corner of the tank. As for setting it up you have to plan the water level based on the pump so that it is fully covered that's the first part of the process. Cleaning is always the tricky part with adding a pump like this which is why I don't do it all that often. But this one shouldnt need to be cleaned for a year or so based on the amount of filter and clay balls it's covered by. I'll rebuild the tank before then though. If you plan to keep it running longer it's best to put it in a corner in a little compartment and only cover it really lightly. So you have quick access..
Hi. I noticed you advised using clay based substrate, could you possibly suggest which type would be good please. Cheers... great video, love the channel as you deffinately know the subject well.

Thank you 😊 It's hard to recommend anything specific regarding clay so I would just trackdown whatever you can so long as it doesn't have any addititives. If you're in a position to collect it from outside I would opt for that. The aim is to replicate the side of a river bank or stream though. Unless you're referring to leca (clay balls) you can find those for sale online easily enough or at most gardening stores

Bloody awesome mate, would love some crabs but very limited in Aus. Nothing in South Australia at moment but I am keeping my eyes out. I have made an aquaterrarium that would be good for them so we will wait and see :)

Cheers! Vampire and Lepidos are actually a banned species in Australia under biosecurity laws. I'm way up here in Poland at the moment so have a good amount of access. Basically winter kills them off pretty quickly so no environmental risks. There are a couple of fresh water species of crab that come out of the NT though that might be good substitutes. But I forget their names 🤔

Yes they are the Darwin Freshwater crab Austrothelphusa sp. but they are still hard to get as most places are sold out all the time@@IndoorEcosystem

For this species, is the pump mostly for water quality, or is it more about having flow? I've seen different care sheets say they need pristine water with flow being not necessary, and others say that the water quality isn't vital and that the flow is criticl to their survival, and the difference is really important.

Both, I spent a ton of time getting info from people who have been keeping them from a long time and they all said flow makes a big difference in their behaviour they are more active and they love to hang out in the flow and just chill. They are a proper rainforest stream crab from cooler waters so flow is really good to have. Without it they won't die but you won't get their full behaviour set. They also like a really gentle shallow slope of sand if you can squeeze it into a tank as well. they like to have easy spots to be half in and half out. I learnt that part after i made the video though.

@@IndoorEcosystem Ok, good to know. I'm building a low tech paludarium, so close, but no cigar. I will technically have enough space for vampire crabs, but I'm still shopping around for a perfect species. *trying* to find a care sheet for tangerine head and mandarin geosesarma, cause I hear they're a little more aquatic than vamps, but I can't find reputable species specific info on them for the life of me.

@@IndoorEcosystem wow that's a lot of names for it 😶, thanks for the info! Seems like a really good idea to keep the rocks in place and from damaging the bottom of the tank. 👍

Do you water your land plants manually or does it stay hydrated due to the clay balls?
@IndoorEcosystem

Usually just one or two light mistings a week but thats mostly for the moss. The plants will absorb straight from the soil and the water section pretty fast.

@@Cow_Juice I'll be looking for the next first! The waterfall came out quite good as it's nice and quite. I didn't want to hear any water sounds while I'm working on my computer. It gets annoying after a while. Ideally though these crabs can handle quite a fair bit of flow so even quite a strong pump would work.

If you place it under the tank where it can't breathe and turn it up. This is between two tanks with 2cms of space so it can breathe and doesn't sweat. It's also on the lowest possible setting with a thermostat so cuts out when it reaches temp.
