I preferred the Custom tones, but not for $5K more that's for sure. Maybe throw a 498T in a Tribute and we're off. Tributes are awesome guitars. I just gave my Gibson Les Paul Studio Tribute with Firebird pups to my teen Grandson. He's played drums for years in school bands and has a year of classical guitar but he wants to play electric. Hopefully this will help motivate him. I warned him about headstock breaks, did I jinx him?

The Custom's volume came out on the bridge, especially with some dirt. That isn't the tone, though. Tweak the volume on the Tribute and voila! They sound the same. This is about feel. Like, do you feel like paying an arm and a leg or only a part of an arm?

I've now tried out 6 Les Paul tributes and the all had that lip. Ive even tried a £10,000 Gibson 335 and that had a lip. The guys from Guitar Guitar in Glasgow seemed a little miffed with me regarding the 335.

I generally could hear no perceivable difference and certainly would not be able to differentiate in a 'live gig' situation but i would like to know (to be honest, an unanswerable question) If you had spent 5k of your own money on one, do you think 'buyers remorse' would force you to like the Custom more? I often think this as I as a lot of us desire a stupidly expensive guitar, in my case a Pensa MK1 but in all reality i have 100 pound guitars(sterling, not weight, for the overseas readers' that would do everything i would need the Pensa for and TBH i could never dream of replicating Knopflers sound or style. So in my case the Tribute has my vote! Awesome channel and content too, thanks!!!

The custom sounds the best. But at 5 grand does not in my book make it the best. I would still stick with the cheaper one. The neck on the custom had bite. While both bridges sound the same. So for a free one won in a prize draw, then it cannot be beaten.

So paint job finish..and a slight difference in tone from the pups? Would this not be cured with a 400 dollar set of boutique pickups and maybe a half an hour of finishing compound and a buffing wheel?...then still be thousands less than the Custom? Satin neck, incidentally, makes me play better.

The custom looks and sounds better but £5K is nothing short of outrageous. There are guitars cheaper than the Tribute such as 2nd hand Japanese made Burny or Tokais LPs that sound better and look better than the Tribute and sound as good as the Custom.

I really don't like the look of the tribute, but there is no way I would pay for a full fat Gibson. If I was forced, by some weird "you WILL treat yourself to a Gibson" law, I would probably opt for a studio. Indeed if that law was enacted right now there is a lovely smokehouse burst one down the local guitar shop with a bit of flame in the top. But no, I would chet a get Chinese one if I wanted one now. And a PRS Se McCarthy over a LP if I wanted to spend anything like real money on one.

The only real comparison we could make is when the guitar sounds clean as it is with no effects. When we mask it behind chorus and overdrive, no wonder we could barely hear the difference.

Nice playing John. Is the extra £3K justified is always going to be a tricky one. I guess for many of us (of a certain age!) the LPC has always been a dream guitar so if you found yourself with 5 grand to spare then it might be hard to resist. I think it did sound a little better as well. On the other hand the Tribute does that “muscular Telecaster thing” very well and for a day to day gigging guitar that you don’t mind getting a few knocks and bangs then it’s probably the sensible choice. Mind you, when has “sensible” ever had anything to do with buying a guitar?!

i couldn''t hear much of a difference. the black finish on the custom showing every smudge, fingerprint and imperfection would drive me nuts The gloss finish on my standards starts to feel dirty if i dont clean it every time i play, which doesnt really happen so much on my tributes, which is the biggest plus for me. Also, i think the small ridge on the side of the fretboard might be because gibson sprays lacquer over the sides of the fingerboard before scraping it back again. On standard models it isnt as noticable because they spray clearcoat over it but it is still there if you run your finger along the binding (body and neck)

Sound wise, not a lot between them. But you make a good point about personal preference like the neck finish. It's those things that make the difference when buying an instrument to your liking and when you are north of 1K.

Great playing, fun comparison and your student buddy is a lucky individual . . . what a treat! FWIW - I still have the 1968 LP Custom I bought in the early 70s and if I was looking to replace it now I would go for the Epiphone Custom and probably put in new pick-ups . . . stock are ok but could probably do better. The 'bones' of the guitar are excellent - solid mahogany, ebony board . . . and play with the hardware if you must. I have spent a bit of time with the Tribute & Studio and really liked the Tribute - really liked the matte finish - it's a straightahead, quality piece of work but the Epi Custom just had the edge for me in terms of familiarity, I guess. I liked the neck on the Studio but not a fan of push / pull pots, a bit fussy for me.

These type of comparisons, for me anyways, sometimes muddy the waters in deciding which one is “better”, or “worth it”. There’s pros and cons, and frankly no matter how much you spend (or try to economize), some piece of the guitar is going to come up short. Of course it’s easier if you have to decide between a $200 or $300 guitar vs. a $1k one. At least if the lower end doesn’t scratch your itch then it’s not impossible to delay gratification and save up for the more expensive one. But this comparison, the bridge between the two is such a chasm to make it an impossibility to afford to save up or pay out of pocket for all but the well heeled or professional musician. Just a lot to consider in the dynamics of buying your “dream” guitar.

As always it's a purely personal decision and entirely subjective. I have two Gibson USA Les Paul's (a Traditional and a Special) which are wonderful instruments, but having played a Custom Shop Les Paul or two I can say with absolute certainty that for me there would be no hesitation in spending the money to buy an R9 or a Black Beauty. I love the care, craftsmanship and quality that goes into a Custom Shop guitar and see it as much as an objet d'art (sorry if that sounds pretentious) and a family heirloom as an instrument. That said, I think that especially now with the new management and a renewed commitment to building quality instruments throughout the lineup, any Gibson from a Tribute to a USA Standard is more than enough guitar for any jobbing musician.

I think yours sounds warmer John, and the Custom is brighter, has a bit more bite, which I prefer, but then so does the Sire L7, which is cheaper than both of them. It's a matter of taste anyway, and I guess could be changed with EQ, or different pickups, which needn't be expensive. I certainly don't like the Custom 4 or 5 times as much.

Love these vids! They get into so much marketing psychology and opinion. Some of us never get to have either one of those guitars, some of us have had them all. Is Blackie worth it? Probably but as someone who bought his first "real LP in 1974, I would not want a weight released LP as I thought John said this one is. For a grand, which is what I think John said the low line Paul costs, I gather there are much better 1 grand other branded LP guitars out there. Sorry John, as much as I look up to you, your Paul looks a little "inexpensive". John is so smart. Whatever we think, John keeps us engaged and thinking. For that, John gets A+, as usual!

Would i be right that In terms of construction the Tribute is solid mahogany v mahogany with maple top for the custom?
@jimmyjames2022

In this case the Custom has a maple cap but there are certain reissue models that sell with all mahogany, no maple. The Tributes all have maple caps except for the Tribute Specials with no cap just mahogany slab. Also the current (post 2019) Tributes are maple neck. Before that they were mahogany like a Studio's.

Isn't a Les Paul Tribute a lie if it is not a Les Paul? I mean it has the shape of the Les Paul, it has the logo. So what is the difference? Or is it like a kit car. Shape of a Lambougini with a Mini Metro engine?

Labour intensive cosmetic nuances. Multi-ply binding and bling. Nothing that alters playability or tone, only the look. Shape of a lambo, with lambo engine, but Metro dashboard buttons.

They call them Tributes because they don't have the historical accuracy of the guitars higher up the lineup. The Tributes have maple necks not mahogany, have weight relief, use pcb boards rather than hand-wired controls and lack all the cosmetic touches (binding, inlays etc).
