After doing guitar setups for 40+ years, if you don't have a 6" 64 or 32 ruler, you can use a quarter for the low E and a dime for the high E strings to set the string height from the 12 fret. Hey, bud you doing good deed here to help out younger/newer guitar players to properly setup their guitars. You got my thumbs up dude!!

One quick thing for all of you that may attempt to do these measurements and adjustments. You should be checking these measurements, as well as tuning and intonation IN THE PLAYING POSITION. You don't play the guitar laying on it's back...Unless it's a pedal steel. Check everything in the playing position, then lay it back down to make the adjustments. Pick it up in to playing position to recheck. Try tuning your guitar on its back, then tune it in playing position. You will hear/see a difference on a tuner.

Why don’t we call 4/64 a 1/16 and why don’t we call 6/64 a 3/32? I’ve never understood this. We all were taught to reduce fractions in school. I’m a woodworker and there is no way I’d ever measure anything at 4/64”. So do we now call 1/2” 32/64”? It’s the same thing, but why should we do that? It doesn’t make any sense and it’s confusing for people who don’t know their way around a tape measure or calipers. I set my digital calipers at 1/16”. You flip them around and you have a perfect string gauge. When you open the calipers up, you have the slide protrude from the ass end. Depending on the strings you’re playing you can add the string width and then it sits on top. Your video is awesome. Great info for someone trying to learn this stuff. I just thought you might know why we don’t reduce fractions when it comes to luthier work?

Whilst I appreciate anyone who gives helpful information, this video isn't the most informative I've ever seen. There were some important things that needed saying that weren't, such as, Tune your guitar up to pitch before making any truss rod adjustments, and before checking your string height. In fact, tune your guitar to pitch before making any measurements. Also, slacken off your strings before attempting to raise or lower your tune-o-matic bridge, should your string height action need adjusting.....in fact it's best to slacken off your strings before making ANY bridge adjustments, including saddle adjustments for intonation because if anyone is doing a set up like this then it's highly likely they're going to need to intonate, which should be done last of all, and after doing all of the other settings. Lastly, it's important to set your string height action at the nut too because you can follow all of these steps but if your string action height at the nut is wrong then your guitar is not going to play in tune at the first 4 frets, guaranteed. Each of these steps are as crucial as each other and need to be followed to the letter and in this order - 1) Nut action. 2) Neck relief & Truss rod adjustments. 3) Pickup height. 4) Bridge height & String height at the 12th fret. 5) Intonation. 6) Re-check measurements again to make sure nothing has gone out. I don't mean to criticise but this information needed adding.

I disagree with your order of operations. You would benefit by having both Neck relief and Bridge saddle height set correctly to measure if the nut slot on the same line. Intonation should also come before pickup height because, raising or lowering the pickup change the magnetic pull on the string enough to impact intonation. Pickup placements, as well as the number of pickups installed, may be a concern. I do agree that once you have made all adjustments, each should be measured again to ensure that all changes work nicely together.

Bridge saddle facings, if it was used a previous setup might have had to flip them to put them into place. Problems in the setup is when the saddle screws are not long enough or are too long, and then the spring is too thick when compressed, or just some other problem getting them right. You want to remember that the string saddle slides back and forth to get the string the best possible length to be close to exact when you pluck harmonic octave at the middle, 12th fret, compared to when you have it pressed down at the 12th fret, they should be exact. Extending the length of the saddle will make a sharp note when pressing down lower the note into correctness. This all depends on the entire setup as this video describes when you want to lower the action into playable position without strings buzzing against frets. So, some of this you know, but a setup is sometimes back and forth so a string tuner turner is kind of a good tool when you have to loosen the strings over and over. If your knobs are not metal, do them by hand, tuning and detuning. Non-metal tuning knobs can crack or break and that is a big pain in the butt. I have some Fender saddle issues and it's not uncommon to turn the whole bridge around and put the saddles around the other way due to the issues I first mentioned.

Hi, I have a question. I have a 1976 Ibanez Les Paul, I've had since 1980. For the longest time, I have wondered...the space between my bridge, and treble pick up is wider than a Gibson. Gibson's are a tad closer. Was that just another attempt at changing, to satisfy the law suit? Because, right before I bought mine, my friend bought his (both white) and his machine head is exactly like the Gibson , while mine slightly differs. ...just curious about the gap, I love the guitar, it sounds, and plays great. Thank you,..and thanks for the video!

Good info but it could steer someone who's never done this before in the wrong direction. First, you showed a truss rod wrench but you never even mentioned truss rod adjustment or showed how to do it and that's the first and most important step in setup. Second, when you mentioned that you can adjust string height at the bridge, you didn't mention that that would throw off your previous string height measurements. You could give a newbie the impression that that's how you adjust the pickup gap. If you're going to demonstrate setting up a guitar, you should show all the steps in their proper sequence. Unfortunately, you didn't do that and, like I said, a newbie might mess things up if they setup their guitar using this video.

This is probably a good starting point and better than most. I've seen a lot give measurements for neck relief and string hight lower than this but my experience is they are just too low. Personally I don't do measurements as all guitars are different. Raise the bridge until there is no fretting out from the 12th fret upwards (nice clean notes) when bending 1st and second strings up a full tone. Then tighten, or loosen (depending on where your starting from) the neck so that all notes below the 12th fret down (mainly the first frets and around the 6th frets area ) ring clean without buzzing or dead notes. Job done.

And if one subscribes to Fender's setup methodology, all of these measurements are actually made in the playing position, just like tuning the guitar in the playing position is the accurate way to tune it. Why ? Because even though the string may be under higher tension, gravity & magnetic pull both influence the string heights. Fender also indicates the 17th fret is where one should finger fret any given string when the capo is clamping the strings at the 1st fret to check height in the playing position at the 8th fret.

I have a 1982 Daion Mark XX. It’s a solid body with 2 humbuckers, beautiful natural wood. The numbers were a little different for each adjustment but I was able to setup the guitar using your instructions and the action is 10 times better. BTW used a nickel for the strings it worked. Thanks for your video.
