A male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor) is hammering away at the trunk of a tree, making a cavity to nest in. Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers are quite small (0.7 oz - 20 grams on average) and not very powerful and they rely on softer or decaying wood to make their nesting holes.
