Dan....Really great tutorial. It's been on my mind (like a golfer's yips) that my seat, posture and leg angle have been inhibiting my bass drum technique. Your reply to the post on thigh angle is a simple tip on body mechanics that has really helped. Thanks.....

every time I start to tell myself I'm a great drummer, I'm humbled... your fills and transitions are insane. I grew up playing an old ludwig kick with a leather strap. Couldn't afford a new one, so just trained obsessively. I got quick... but not that quick. You're a world class drummer brutha.

@GrooveDrummin I had a set of cheap bongos my sister gave me and used wooden chop sticks for my first drum set. I was desperate as well...My parents still didn't see my love for the drums so it wasn't until I was an adult that I bought my own set. I did find that the desks at school, the ones with a flip up lid, had a very cool sound and I did a lot of hand drumming on those. Anything that I could hit to make the drum sound satisfied my need!

I describe the motion to be similar to tap dancing. Even though I can't dance, It's all about the snap and keeping control of the footboard. Have your thigh at 90 deg or higher for greater power and control but most of the action comes from the ankle. Think of wiggling a pencil horizontally such as that in the illusion to make it look like it's rubber, imagine your foot as the pencil. Your ankle is like the "conductor" or "hand" that creates the stroke. Let me know how you make out..

I just noticed something really interesting. When you execute the bass drum doubles your foot actually slides down the pedal a bit. Most of the instructionals I've seen on YT the foot either stays in place, lifts off or slides up the pedal. I'm not being negative at all about your technique, and I'm very happy there is an alternative to the other methods I've seen! I'm really inspired to try it your way! Thank you! :-)

The size of your foot should not matter, just keep your toes about and inch or two from the top of the pedal, basically find the fulcrum on the pedal and place the top of your foot slightly higher than the fulcrum point. You can still bury your beater if you have a ported kick. I suggest not to with an unported kick because of the sound. Try both ways.

I like wearing my red, black and white EVH Signature shoes while drumming, they provide a bit of extra power while not taking any feel from the pedal. I use the same technique but i suffer in faster songs like achilles last stand due to previous leg and shin injuries. Doesn't stop me though.

Once again...Awesome! Question...How do you not get your foot/ankle to cramp up? By all means I'm no drummer but when I've messed around with the drums in the studio and I'd do what you're doing with the bass drum pedal with my heel up, after a couple minutes my ankle would cramp up. I know it takes lots of practice. Just like it took lots & lots of practice for me to learn how to play lead guitar. Getting those scales down, but drums are a different beast altogether. I'm going to keep checking your vid's so I can get this stuff ingrained in my head so when I do get the chance to go behind a drum kit I can keep your techniques in mind.

Coolness! I love to hear from guitar players. Most of the work is in the spring of the pedal. You use that to your advantage. Kind of like bouncing a ball, you only have to push it down.

Thank you so much for this video. I really like how you comment at each part throughout the video. it is as if you know what viewers will be thinking. Great video! I have a question that I hope you can help me with. I am practising my doubles on the bass drum, and somehow at the slower tempos, doing a heel toe makes it rather challenging (due to the pedal springing back at a different speed). Doing heel toe is best from a certain tempo onwards. I think you know what I mean. So how should I approach the heel toe? How do I practise it slowly? Or should I just practise using the ankle and slowly up my tempo, and my feet will discover and realise its own technique? Looking forward to your reply! =)
@GrooveDrumming
6 жыл бұрын
When playing doubles slower the only technique employed would be simply tapping the pedal twice by muscle. When speeding up use the ankle as a pivot point and bounce twice using the spring of the pedal. btw...the spring should be somewhat tight. Use the fulcrum of the pedal plate, usually somewhere in the middle to tip to your advantage. Good luck!

@CynicYouth Yes, it gets tired under the knee if I sit too low but if I pass a 90 degree angle with position of leg then it's ok. So long as your thigh is not parallel to the floor, you should be ok. Thanks!

@Masterpeces Practice to a metronome at each tempo for intervals of at least 4 or 5 min. total about 30 min. a day and keep uping the tempo to as fast as you can maintain a steady RR LL for the full 5 min. As each week goes by, I can assure you that you will play doubles much faster and smoother in no time. Start with the Left also LL RR LL RR - it will feel different and might enable you to cruise. Don't forget to bounce the stick, just don't hold it too tight. Let me know how you make out :)
@tricky92x

This is what I did for at least 2 years in a row as a teenager... very slow, very deliberate 16th note triplets on the bass drum over a metronome for 20-30 minutes. To mix it up, you can switch up your sticking a bit. The muscle memory from playing that slow and steady tempo allows you to play at crazy speeds when you're groovin
