Father was a music teacher and had his own music store and is an accomplished French hornest and writes music and played with symphonies and college bands and would like to surprise him. Hi Maggie. That's great that you were getting sounds - not so great that the next day you weren't. Either your lips weren't vibrating or the air just wouldn't go through your Trumpet. If it's the lips thing, try getting a buzz going in just the mouthpiece before you put it in the instrument. If you can get a good mouthpiece buzz sound but the air won't pass through the Trumpet then my guess is that either there's a valve turned around in its casing or - if you took the valves out - a couple of valves might be in the wrong casing. They're different from each other. If one of your valves is making a clicking sound when you push it down and let it up, try turning the cap (where your fingertip goes) clockwise until it clicks into place, then tighten the cap below that. See if it plays now. If that's not the problem, look at the links below and see if they help. I'll make a note to do a quick video on turned around valves, because that happens to a lot of young players. Good Luck! At 17:50 in this video I'm putting valves back in a Trumpet kzitem.info/news/bejne/pqhm2H6DcWWhiXo At around the 5 minute mark in this video there's something useful: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2GqHmYxrcqSqhG0 There's a long explanation in this article if you like that sort of thing: trumpetheroes.com/trumpet-valves/

I have a question which, in concept, has to do with extending range. However it is not about extending range into top-C and beyond, but rather about getting a very young student to progress from F above bottom C to G. Do you have any suggestions on how to TEACH this please? I have been playing trumpet for about 45 years and have long since forgotten how I progressed from the first open note to the second. Recently I started teaching a young girl (8 years old) to play the trumpet. I play the trumpet at church each week and this led to the girl asking me to teach her. She can now get fairly decent sounds from C to F but cannot get to the G. I have tried to explain about tightening the muscles in the lips and about changing the position and shape of the tongue but this is all very theoretical and is not getting the success I am hoping for. I have tried getting her to whistle low and high sounds to get her to experience the changes in the lips and tongue, but she is very new to whistling as well and cannot vary her whistling. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get her from F to G?

Kitty kallen is the singer with Harry James on this song, I have it on a 78rpn and its an absolute joy. I am just about to start learning the trumpet and I thank you greatly for this video, the simplest explanation to begin I have found, especially about blow speed changing the notes, I look forward to following on more of your lessons, thank you for taking time to explain so easily, an enjoyable video that keeps interest from the beginning !
