Extracting a broken backing plate bolt from the spindle on our 71 C20 project.
Building on the method shown in Lesson #1, it gets more extreme from there. This extraction method has proved to work well for me on everything from tiny #6 screws, up to over 1" diameter bolts. In cast iron, aluminum or any other metal, it makes no difference, unless the bolt is stainless steel, in which case drilling is the only option, welds just break too easily.
Getting the feel for the bolts breaking point is something that only comes with experience, so be patient, keep welding on more nuts, and it will eventually come out. I can not remember the last time this method did not work, even a set screw that a customer drilled out in a winch drum (10/10 difficulty), took a while, but I always win.
