Haha! I don’t know how it goes over in California but around here in North Carolina people do say you “look smart” when they think your clothes are stylish!

That’s really interesting; I had no idea! As far as someone “looking smart” as in stylish, I’ve only ever heard of it as a British phrase in books and movies and such, but apparently some parts of the US use it that way too.

“You're lookin smart” is where jp gets their definition from.. ofc the meaning is still a bit mistranslated but it is not as far off

good way to TL 頭がいい might be: You've got a good head on your shoulders. that is a phrase i know people use.
