Lesson 559 - English grammar How to use Either and Neither
Either and Neither can be used in different ways and they have different meanings.
Either has several meanings:
Meaning (1) used in negative sentences instead of "also" or "too"
-I don't eat meat and my wife doesn't either.
-A: I've never been to the Laos. B: I haven't either.
-The restaurant has good food, and it’s not expensive either.
Either (2) used when referring to a choice between two possibilities:
-Either candidate would be ideal for the job.
-A: Do you prefer pork or beef? B: I don't like either.
-Either you leave now or I call the police!
Either (3) both
-We have teachers living on either side of my house.
-I have small kids on either side of me.
Neither = Not either
-We got 2 TVs, but neither works properly.
-Neither of my parents likes my boyfriend.
Questions and answers
B: -Me neither.
-I don’t either.
-Neither do I.
A: I can’t eat chili.
B: -Me neither.
-I can’t either.
-Neither can I.
