What does "King rag" and "Queen rag rag" mean? You mention that in Lesson 8. Thanks!

"rags" are small cards that are not honour cards. The AKQJ and some say the 10 are honours. So the smaller "spot" cards, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are termed "rags". If you have K rag your holding is K2 or K5 etc. They are usually denoted as Kx with the "x" meaning a non-honour card. Or Qxx would be "Queen - rag - rag"

Hi. Enjoying the lessons.. Does the response to takeout double at 14:34 conflict with the Beginners Cheatsheet responses? Probably not, but, it would be great if you could explain why.. TAKEOUT DOUBLES This is over an opponent’s opening bid Shows 12+ AND 3+ cards in all the UNBID SUITS Responses If your RHO does not bid, you MUST BID 0-8 - Bid your best suit at MINIMUM level - give preference to a Major 9-12 - Jump bid with a 4+ suit 13+ - Bid GAME with a 5+ suit 1NT = 6-9 and stopper in opener’s suit 2NT = 10-12 and stopper 3NT = 13+ and stopper

Hi Brendan - great to find someone going into the lessons in such depth to notice these things. Sounds like you are really keen - great! I will let the Education Committee at NZB know of the conflict in the materials. I find 0-9 easier for beginners to remember - as it makes logical sense that you are still a minimum hand, as you would be with 6-9.

what happens if north opens bidding 1H, east overcalls 1S, south has support for hearts ?

Just ignore the 1S bid, and bid as normal John. If you have a fit, show your support at the appropriate level. Lesson 7 covers more on how to cope with overcalls so maybe try that one for more help on the subject you have raised.
