I just ordered and received my very first jelly rolls, rulers, rotary cutter and cutting board to make my very first quilt ever; a small throw. I don’t own a sewing machine (yet), so I’m going to do it all by hand. I’m so excited!

I was fortunate enough to learn how to hand sew at a young age and hand embroider ... I don't see it as daunting task at all. I'm way more afraid of a machine than I am my own two hands. You will find that once you take up hand sewing, even if you just do it for 30 minutes a day, the more you do it, the better you will get and the more you will enjoy it. You'll find that as long as you breathe deeply and check your ergonomics, you will get quite good also...for your brain and your body to slow down and get totally out of your head and into your creations is a healing experience. 🥰

It is so interesting that you say that. I started hand piecing a few months ago and am LOVING it! It is soooo relaxing and freeing. I am still learning, but I am very happy with how far I have come! You are so right! Thank you for this. ❤️❤️❤️

@@SewtheDistance Oooooh....I'm loving handing sewing so much my Pfaff is gathering dust. (Not really - I cover it with thick fleece)...BUT... I had to put neosporin on both thumbs with bandages last night, bcuz I've had a horrible time finding proper thimbles.🥴 This is the ONLY thing holding me back, aside from fibromyalgia.... this makes me sad. I have Googled and searched KZitem so many times to find a thimble that will work for me. I have a feeling if MEN sewed there would probably be much more options in the way of a thimble. One of the very biggest issues of finding a proper thimble that works, is to have it be the right size and not fall off... I'm really sad about my thimble issues...😔

@@Charlie-cz3jh ,hi about thimbles I saw a KZitemr her name is Julie Thornton, she used two bandages on her thimble finger, she said it works great for her, she was sewing hexagons in the video I watched..maybe you can give it a try…

Lovely quilt. I made an epp flower garden quilt with over 1000 pieces. I applique it to background and did not cut the hexagons. The quilt is my prized possession.. It is also non traditional. I added a sand path before the green path.

I just found your channel. Thank you for the inspiration that I CAN create a quilt by hand. I've already made a couple hundred hexies. While recovering from foot surgery for a couple of months I intend on making a whole lot more!! Gives my hands something to do while I cannot be in my craft room. And I'll be bingeing your videos :-)

Just found this one and I love it. Hexies are great. Here in Queensland where I live we do not need thick, warm quilts and so a coverlet is just the thing. I am really learning the importance of a cohesive colour throughout quilting and am now thinking with much more knowledge when choosing colours because of all these lessons learned from your vintage quilts. Great work Kris, love them.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Coverlets are great in the summer. It seems that they have fallen out of fashion in the quilting world, but I think we need to bring them back. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it!

When the quilt was flipped over to the other side I immediately got the feeling the quilt was worked on by two individuals. One came upon the work of the first person and took up the challenge to finish the quilt. Even if they had never quilted before but remembered the beloved person was a quilter. An UFO finished by a daughter or grand daughter, neighbor? in tribute to the original quilter. Finishing it as a sort of as a tribute to the original quilter. I'm not even sure which side of the quilt was made first. I wonder if the more even colored side was from shirts the original quilter owned who had made the more colorful side quilt when she was younger. I am enjoying your KZitems of old quilts and what we can learn from them.

The slightly wonky hand quilting is so charming! Do you think it was made in the 1970s or earlier?
@SewtheDistance

I would say it's from the 70s or even early 80s, but the maker definitely brought in other fabrics that are much older. I love the hand quilting too! Definitely adds to the charm. Thank you for watching!

Hello. I just subscribed to your channel this morning here in Southern California. Where are you located? I’ve been binge watching today on your discovery of older quilts and I’m finding it very interesting. My mother gave me her box of old quilt tops, fabric pieces and partly done blocks a few years back. My plan is to finish gifts using what she started for my adult kids. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

What a great gift from your mother! My husband and I both grew up in central Pennsylvania and moved to Massachusetts about 28 years ago. We decided to move back to Pennsylvania last year, to the area where we grew up. It has been an adjustment, but a great one! We purchased our house sight unseen last year. I would not recommend doing this (what were we thinking???) but I am so happy to be back "home." I will be back in 2022 with more old quilts! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! Happy New Year!
