My 1st time going for a car in Msa was gd because I was going for a specific car in a specific yard. So it wasn't a matter of going around. 2nd time came and I met this broker after a friend connected us. From 10am-6:30pm we went from yard to yard and at some point, he got tired of me since I was insisting on a particular model with specific genuine mileage as maximum. All through he was insisting on "buy this or buy that we close the deal it's getting late". One vehicle had its mileage tampered with and on doing my background check as we were still viewing it, I realized it was shipped from japan having a mileage of 243,000km but here it had 43,000km!! You can imagine the blunder i'd have made considering it was cheaper than the rest by more than 100k. It is at 6:30pm that I found my car at 45,678km genuine mileage! Never buy a car in a hurry and when in Msa, remain focussed on what you had gone to buy.

Only go to Mombasa when you are going to pick your car. Search for your car online from the comfort of your village in Muranga from reputable websites like sbt japan or papera. Mileage is never tampered with in Japan!!. Knock off those brokers and deal only with a clearing agent in Mombasa. You will be surprised at how much you will save!! While at it I wish KRA would allow individuals to do their own clearing, we would be in charge from start to finish!!

I work in the used car sales industry..... One thing I have learned about Kenyans is that they always go for cheapest option. Ata akipata Gari poa then askie a cheap one ataenda kubuy the cheap one. Kenyans don't understand that cheap is expensive. Most Mombasa cars are cheap but end up being very expensive.

I find your story very educative especially for first time car owners. Always work with trusted individuals. You can not save money for over five years and be careless with it simply because you have seen a cheaper deal somewhere, as its always said, cheap is expensive. But atleast you got back your hard earned cash.

Another key lesson, aside from consultation is that you should always conduct your own independent research on the car you wish to purchase prior, get as much information as you can from the web, to the extent you'll feel comfortable taking a stand. Finally, unless you are buying a brand new car from the showroom always leave a margin of error for these used vehicles.

Also use a car broker it might be expensive but they know much more about these car yards than you since they deal with them on daily basis but the broker should be someone with your interests at heart. Before going to msa for the car, get enough pictures and research the car much more so that by the time you land in Mombasa it’s just to check that the car can move, gear box is ok, functionality of parts is ok, it’s just to actualize the transaction. Also pray that everything will go well as planned, then ofcos DONT PAY IN CASH.

I will never forget that unfortunate Saturday morning when I landed in Msa to specifically pick VW golf variant from Khushi motors. The deal was too good and I was like mimi nishafika. I did few checks hurriedly though, did a bank transfer in Equity bank and picked the car at around noon. As obvious I did minor service and started my journey to Nairobi. Even before exiting the island, the car started misbehaving. I called the dealer and notified him on the same. Upon reaching Nrb I went to straight to my mechanic whom upon thorough diagnosis he found out that the engine was tempered, some of the clock lights were covered with masking tape. The car costed my more than 250k to stabilize it and mark you the dealer turned deaf ear to me up-to date. Try Khushi motors at your own risk.

Genuine research would have told you it's not a Toyota vs. Nissan issue. Kenya Toyota owners and their mechanics are always one generation behind technology wise. Nissans and other car makes have used CVT transmission way before the first Toyota Corolla in 2010. When the first Corolla with CVT were imported Kenyan Mechs promptly topped up the gear box with ATF destroying the gearbox immediately. The new shape Corolla was tagged as ""gear box issues""" forgetting that CVT transmission fluids must meet sensitive manufacture specs and they would last for 100,000 Kms..... My 2 cents.

It's also rare to find a bad/faulty car, don't they undergo rigorous inspections before they are shipped?are you not given an inspection report of your unit? people here are in business.... In japan for example, some sites are even having clearance sale and heavily discounted units....so you can find the total landing cost ya that nissan Latio can be 700K but Njenga here is being sold for at 870k....hata wakiuza gari mbili kwa mwezi, hiyo ni pesa mingi sana😂😂,car dealers will make north of 150k off a unit.....more expensive cars, they will pocket up to 1M+ In addition,if you fear buying a faulty car many of japanese exporters have their offices in the country,so you can select a unit of your choice, and they help you ship and acquire the vehicle at a very reasonable fee,if the car is faulty, then they have themselves to blame...
