Most of the time you don't give hormone blockers at that time because if you stop them you can mess up your development. Because puberty is when your hormones normalize, taking hormone blockers through puberty causes your hormones to normalize with the blockers. Taking the blockers away can cause weird things to happen as your body tries to cope with what is, to it, a non-normal situation. Though most of this is unstudied because the experiments have horrible ethical implications for the test subjects. There have been a number of non-peer-reviewed experiments about gender identity in children, but they have a horrible track record (lots of mental health disorders and suicides). No actual medical facility is going to sanction these experiments.
@zeyode

Wait, why? Don't hormones cause their own "puberty" effect anyway? From my understanding, it just seems cruel to not perscribe them the proper hormones and blockers. Perscribing them seperately seems pretty risky though.
@ajjdgj6tmgedvnmtmek
7 жыл бұрын
When undergoing puberty, your body will overproduce hormones and then reduce the levels it puts out to create a balance. This is why many of the effects of puberty are temporary. If someone is on hormone blockers before this process, the body will accept the new state as normal. However, if that person goes off hormone blockers later in life (say at 30), the body gets very confused - it thinks being on hormone blockers is normal and this new situation is abnormal. This causes its own puberty effect, but the results are almost always worse than normal puberty. If one is to start hormone blockers during puberty, the immediate effects are also very unpleasant. That risky choice would be perfectly acceptable to present to an adult, but minors are a different case. There's two major points here: First, going through puberty shifts your own perception of gender; prior to puberty, the conceptualization of gender is very different than post-puberty. Somebody could have mild gender dysphoria prior to puberty but not afterwards. As hormone blockers and HRT are primarily given due to gender dysphoria, they may not be medically necessary. Second, this choice is something that will have life-long consequences. As a society, we've agreed that being a minor means one is incapable of making these kinds of decisions (you can't get married, enter into legal contracts, buy a car in your name, drink, smoke, drive, etc. until you reach a certain age). Should we allow someone to go on hormone blockers before they're legally allowed to do all that? (I could go deeper into the ethical and legal arguments, but they boil down to minors having limited understanding of risks and consequences.)

I've always had kind of a weird relationship with gender identity politics. I'm a guy, but a lot of my aesthetic and visual characteristics, both natural and voluntary, are kind of feminine and androgynous, and a lot of my personality traits and personal identity reflect that. I'm not trans, or non-binary, or anything like that. I'm just a guy who's very comfortable with being different from the norm. I don't make a big deal about it. I'm not prideful about it. I'm just true to myself and nothing more. I've often found myself claimed by people in the LGBT community as a trans-esque person, but that's not really what I think of myself as. I've had people try to tell me that I'm genderfluid or even trans and I just don't know it. They have a term for that in the trans community. An 'egg' is someone who they believe is trans but just wont admit it to themself. I even dated a trans girl for a while who seemed to be trying to groom me into being a trans girl myself, and I didn't realize just how uncomfortable and dehumanized that would make me feel until it was actually happening to me. Like my entire identity is just wrong and needs to conform to their view of what gender identity should look like. And, like, my feeling, and why gender identity politics have always rubbed me kind of the wrong way, is that gender just shouldn't matter. People should dress, act, and be however they want regardless of what gender they are. To me, identifying as genderfluid or non-binary is like saying that who I am, a guy with some feminine qualities, is fundamentally broken. It cannot be. It's wrong. I am not a perfectly archetypal man or woman, therefore I MUST be something else. For all people talk about how gender identity politics are supposed to liberate and redefine how we even think of gender, I feel like all they've ever done is reinforce gender norms for that very reason. It's mistaking the symptoms for the actual problem. And I'm not trying to say that every trans or LGBT person is like this, or that being trans is in and of itself wrong or misguided. Like, this is MY perspective. I don't expect other people to feel or think the same way I do. That would be insane. But I just feel like there's no place for me in LGBT. Because I don't want my place to be in LGBT. I want it to be with everyone. I don't think of myself as better or even different from any of my heterosexual cisgender friends. I'm just me. ===================================== One of my favorite movies is Chasing Amy, which, in a sentence, is about a lesbian who falls in love with a guy. But what it's really about, I think, is being honest with yourself about who you are. It's about understanding that true acceptance comes from within, not from external validation. Your identity, whether it be your gender, your sexuality, your values, or political beliefs - it's all one big open-ended question that you're never finished answering. And only you can answer it. Too many people think of themselves inside a box. Like they're a multiple choice question; gay, straight, bi, ace - trans, cis, non-binary - liberal, conservative, centrist. No one term is ever going to describe you, because none of them are about you. They're nebulous, generalized ideas that describe billions of people. That doesn't mean that they don't have their place. But you can't look to the outside world to find answers about who you are. All of that is inside you. Your identity is, inextricably, informed by the world around you, but it does not come from it.

hello, four year old comments. i'd like to say the most 'gender transitioning' you can do before 16 is usually taking hormone blockers that only *pause* physical puberty, so you can come off them and develop as normal. if a trans person wanted more than that, they would need a bunch of sessions with psychologists to assess if hormones/surgery is right for them. i want to stress that this isn't easy, you can't just "rush them to a doctor for hormone shots". plus there's a massive waitlist for these things and it's expensive as hell. so for you, op, you likely would've just gotten a haircut and some men's clothing.

I am a cis-male now, but when I was a child, I was very unsure of my gender and never felt that I fit in as a boy. If hormone blockers had been a thing that was available at the time I was starting puberty, I am sure that I would have taken them. Which means I likely would have never become comfortable enough in my adult male body to actually realize that I do enjoy being a man and want to stay one, and that my childhood aversion to being male stemmed completely from the social constructs of the male gender role. So for that reason, the topic of starting hormone therapy at such a young age makes me very uncomfortable and raises a lot of ethical concerns in my mind. I feel that transgender activists who truly do desire progress should focus less on encouraging young trans people to demonize their natural born bodies, and more on breaking down the restrictive walls set up by society's gender roles which cause people to feel so distressed in the first place for not fitting into the mold expected for them.

i get that im four years late, but i do want to note to anyone passing by that its been proven my multiple studies that hormone blockers have no long term (or really any substantial short term) negative effects on children, since it simply delays puberty for a while. once they are older and can determine what they want, they can either go through hormone therapy to go through their preferred puberty, or simply stop taking the blockers and let the hormones their body produces onset the original puberty they put off. If you delay it with hormone blockers but decide to go back, there's no bad side effects or anything, your puberty is just both later and faster than usual, which is why people are advocating for hormone *blockers* for minors and *not* HRT. nobody's advocating to make kids get sex changes or anything (maybe really fringe people that nobody takes seriously, if even that) i mean, how many stories have you heard where some trans person didnt realize what they were feeling until they were, like, an adult and they were *miserable* going through puberty? Access to puberty blockers makes a HUUUUUGE impact in making transitioning (both mentally *and* physically) a lot easier, and i think its a very low risk solution with a lot of rewards.

Literally two years later, plain and simple as can be I look back and want to send my heel through teenage me's still developing, hormone drowning brain. Teenagers just grasp desperately, trying to find something to cling onto so they can be perceived as special or unique. The difference I feel in the past six or so years I think when this SJW agenda driven type nonsense wasn't so much on the rise is that, the world wasn't bending over backwards so much to avoid offending someone. You got blasted by reality and very, VERY quickly find who you really are. Yes, there are certainly genuine trans, gay, bi, what have you's and what not's out there that where actually born that way and didn't choose it. But when you look at these fucking lists of sexualies and gender identities, it's hard to not scratch your head and think, "You're just making this shit up as you go allong." It's like a child trying to tell a story, and then the dragon vampires know how to cast fireballs. And then the fireballs teleport and blow up into more fireballs. I was imaging the kid to be some kind of eunuch. Isn't that essentially what you're doing if you transition somebody before puberty? Like you're blocking those chemical and hormonal changes that the body was building towards from day one. I guess if you replace them with hormonal therapy later down the line it does help that transition to the other gender, but it still strikes me as odd. Not gonna' mention the ethics of letting somebody that young go through such an ordeal, but despite that I'm A-Okay with transgender people.

From what I remember. All the blockers do is slow puberty down a fuck ton. Puberty would still happen eventually. But that's what HRT is for. I'm a little torn on kids being trans and wanting hormones. On one hand. Gender Dysphoria can really suck. I hate it. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. But on the other hand that is way too young. Kids are impressionable little shits. They don't know anything about the world. Puberty is important not just physically. Puberty is when you sort of "wake up" as a person. You start to get empathy and you basically blossom into who you are mentally. That has to happen to along with any awkward body changes. And again, hormones are fucking magic if you ever look at before and after HRT photos. Like holy shit we're advancing pretty well at that stuff. Not so much with the surgeries but at least the hormones help.

@@rosenrot234 No, I'll repost what I said to someone else because it's a pain to reword to get around the automated [word erasers]. Hormone blockers cause disruptions to development, for example T is necessary in boys to reorganize short term memory, emotional centers, & other aspects of the brain. To disrupt this is to damage brain development. Further most hormone blockers for males began as chemicals to sterilize for purposes of treating cancer, several of these were also used in [ew gen icks] programs & as punishment for [SA of fent ers]. This argument has been obviously absurd from the moment that it was introduced as we have known for decades that hormonal imbalance & low testosterone is devastating to males & high testosterone devastating to females in teenage years for both mental & physical development. It doesn't just affect the brain either. Ligaments, heart, muscles, bones, brain, lungs, etc. are all affected negatively by such impacts. Cases where hormonal imbalance was observed in teenagers affecting these developments were known long ago, decades before this was done. I have no problems with adults doing whatever they wish to themselves, I may think it damaging more than helpful based on what I have observed but you are free to do as you wish. Good video, the comic sounds awful. Not taking the piss, just letting you guys know: There's no proof that hormone blockers actually cause any harm. I'm genuinely not sure how I feel about people giving them to their kids regardless, but that's the fact. Also, Truscum is an... Old, old tumblr thing, I'm surprised she put them in the comic. Doing cocaine = something wrong and harmful to yourself. How is being gay the same? I'm catholic and tbh I think following christian morals also means having critical thinking. Otherwise you're blindly following, which misses the point entirely. You've clearly shown, by your comparison and the way you talk about it that you see something "wrong" with being gay. You're entitled to your opinion, but with that you have to accept that a lot of people will find it hurtful and ignorant. Even if you have gay friends, I feel bad for them honestly.

Khanman tbh, as someone who is gay, I respect that you see the world that way. Because ultimately you're not hurting anyone, and the fact that even though you (not sure how to put this lol) have a disagreement with people having homosexual tendencies you don't let that get in the way of treating others decently. and that is literally all I could ever ask for in another person. I have no right to dictate what you think, perhaps I can have a civil argument, but I really hate how there's a group in the lgbt+ community who have problems with people like you. I really don't think having your mindset is all that harmful to anyone. however this group tends to disagree, as if we don't have your full on acceptance, you're suddenly a terrible person for not complying with this linear mindset. Anyway, Im glad there's people like you. Even though I disagree with how you view homosexuality! Wish the best for you!! :D

You can't go through female puberty unless you're female. You literally cannot undergo the extremely complex transformation of puberty as a female if you are not a female. Same for males. Like these people claiming that they're going through puberty or that these tims can menstruate or that they now have vaginas even though it's just an inverted mutilated penis and not the complex organ that is the vagina... it's fucking insulting! It's unbelievably dehumanizing for women! I'm so sick of this! And then on top of it women are gaslit and told that we are the bigots... That's just fucking insane.

Regarding your small "hate the sin love the sinner" discussion- I know the generally accepted idea is that Christianity speaks against homosexuality but I think that is heavily influenced by Christians and the church throughout history. The Bible itself is less clear. Granted, I'm talking only about New Testament, and am rejecting an equivalency between "Christianity" and "the church", but still, I think you can make a strong argument that the actual words of the New Testament do not condemn homosexuality as much or at all as popularly believed. I'm not an expert and now would probably be a good time to provide some citations but instead I'mma just throw that out there and bail haha. Not sure why I even wrote this comment tbh but there it is.

Comparing being gay to being addicted to cocaine is pretty offensive dude. Unlike taking drugs, being attracted to the same gender as yourself is not a choice. You don't 'choose' your sexual orientation.You're entitled to whatever you believe, but people loving other people regardless of gender is not some illness, sin or dangerous addiction. The bible says a lot of retarded shit, most sensible people ignore the more questionable parts. .

CIS is an acronym meaning: Comfortable In Skin.
@KirbyFanDude
Жыл бұрын
Cis- (cisgender is the full word, cis is the prefix) is meaning on the same side of, NOT an acronym. Cisgender basically describes that their gender is close enough to/aligns with the assigned biological sex. I see a lot of people using it wrong. It's especially bad reasoning given there are transgender people who don't/can't physically transition and those who are comfortable in their own skin, both pre- and post-transition...Anyway, it's just to give a reasonable description of non-trans people, not for people comfortable in their own skin. There's plenty of people, even in the comments here that said they were cis, decided not to transition, but had gender dysphoria or were mistreated for being gender nonconforming to some degree. Sorry but this was gonna bother me if I didn't correct it

All of the characters in Assigned Male looked like the same person. The art style is just bland & ehhh OK'ish, but there's no real conflict what so ever in this fucked-up webcomic. It needs drama & character development. I see it that Stephie's mother to be horrible person who seeks praise in her fucked-up agenda to change her son into a daughter w/ drugs till her child gets gender re-assignment surgery while she fuck-over her child's mindset. Also Stephie is a bully & self-made victim. There is bit's of sillyness in a few of the comics that I've read, but it just seems to be that the webcomic is either the creator's personal soapbox to scream into the ether of "The Wired" (The Internet) on her thoughts & her views on her life, or a story of Stephie being insane & this is all just the madness of her life that only exists in Stephies mind. What it would be cool is to find-out that Stephie is looked-up in a padded cell & is completely insane.
