I totally agree with you. I find it extremely frustrating to constantly adjust the brightness up. It would be grate to have a shut off or on option.

My Duet is driving me crazy! I used to turn the tablet off, using the power button, whenever I was finished using it. Then, upon manually turning it on and logging in, no problem. After I purchased the keyboard and started putting it to "sleep" though, I now find myself having to go straight into settings to adjust the brightness. Since I don't use the Duet daily, I thought that it might have been something I accidentally did, or that perhaps one of the updates changed something that I paid no attention to. Glad to know it isn't me!!! :)

I discovered this, by surprise, on my HP Chromebase. Right now, as the sun began shinning in my office today, suddenly my screen brightness has gone up almost all the way.... the opposite of your situation. In my situation manually adjusting the brightness disables it until --apparently-- a sleep/wake session. Due to other glitches in the Chromebase, I no longer let it sleep, but instead use the screen saver. Everything is now happier for my Chromebase experience and auto-brightness. As for no settings and the "guesswork" you refer to, is after all, classic Google!

This is an INSANELY annoying feature. Now, manually changing the brightness doesn't do much; it's just a master brightness, and the auto brightness still goes. It'll be this dark environment I'm in, and the screen literally turns itself off like chromebooks do when you turn it all the way down, so I have to turn it way up. I honestly don't mind auto brightness on devices, but they screwed something up really badly. I have to change the brightness literally every time I switch a tab. I'm contemplating returning this chromebook and getting a computer that doesn't have this. Worst feature I've ever seen. It's such a basic thing to just add an auto brightness toggle stick in the settings. I've put black tape over what I think is the ambient light sensor, the camera, and both, and it still changes itself. I'm hopeless at this point.

When I was on my Lenovo Chromebook, my tabs somehow felt like they were changed to high contrast (no negative). I wonder what the effect is called. I've been trying to disable it.

my son has one of these chrome books from school, its messed up you cant turn it off but i wonder if something as simple as putting tape over the sensor will fix the issue.

I've tried something like that before, but it just doesn't work very well. It sucks, but manually adjusting the brightness whenever the issue pops up seems to be the best way to deal with this.

@@OctillionthTech he did try that but as soon as he opened a new page it would go back to auto adjusting.

Yep. I prefer a dimmer screen. I dim screen manually. I go to bed. Next day, I open my chromebook to start work... Lo and Behold, I am BLINDED by the Chromebook LIGHT having decided on its own... that "brighter" is better. ***sigh***

Pixelbook Go used to have the bad behavior with the screen dimmer. Now it just doesn't work. Auto backlit keyboard stopped working correctly also. Seems like ambient light sensor problem. Running Chrome 105.0.5195.42 beta. Noticed abnormal battery drain that caused me to look into possible reasons. Welp, keyboard being lit all the time could be a reason! Went into flags and experimented with toggles for both keyboard and ambient light sensor - no joy.

Well, running into problems like that is one of the risks of running the beta channel of Chrome OS. By using the beta channel, you're essentially agreeing to a beta tester. If you want the most stable/issue-free experience, using the stable channel of Chrome OS tends to be the better option. Now Google has a history of rolling out bad features/updates (onto the stable channel of Chrome OS) that are riddled with issues that should have been caught at the beta/alpha stage, but that's a slightly different issue. In your case, I suggest reporting this to the Chrome OS developers. What your experiencing is a pretty major issue that needs to be fixed before it gets rolled out onto the stable channel of Chrome OS.

@@OctillionthTech thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was reading in the forums where ppl were having the same trouble as I am and busting their machines all the way back to stable channel, power washing, etc still didn't work. I agree, this needs reported and worked on before it hits stable channel. Such a basic thing to get so wrong.
