Videos like this run polar opposite of channels like Linus Tech Tips that only build with new parts, often using ridiculously-priced powerhouse parts, a.k.a. "the latest and greatest". Good work RGHD, videos like this are why your channel rocks!

Yeah, the only time they "review" the older hardware is USUALLY just so they can mock it, especially on LTT. It's almost like they only "review" older or used hardware just to look down on "budget PC peasants". I've never seen any of those channels you listed post a LEGITIMATE video about used or old PC hardware.

Yeah, that's another thing too...Bitwit is VERY biased against AMD (though I have seen him use AMD hardware a few times, but only when someone gave it to him). But hey, I'll tell you one channel that's just as good as this one, Tech City. That dude is pretty awesome too. KZitem needs more channels like Tech City and RGHD around...not all these spoiled brats that act like they're used to getting everything they want.

The complete lack of FPS change between 720p and 1080p on Overwatch shows a CPU bottleneck. Increasing the resolution puts more strain on the GPU, but the raw FPS remained the same, thus showing that the CPU was limiting the FPS.

The used market is definitely worth while if you're patient. A private school in my area was selling their desktops to upgrade to tablets. Picked 1 up for $20, which was ridiculous for the specs. I also sourced a used aftermarket cpu cooler on craigslist for $10, a case and psu (both new in box from Goodwill for $15 total) and a new 1050 ti oc ($175) from amazon. I also bought and flipped a gaming laptop which I found for a crazy deal in order to purchase an Oculus rift touch bundle for only $150 out of my own funds. This is my $370 buget VR build. -i5 2400 3.1ghz -8gb ddr3 ram -1tb 7200rpm hdd -Gigabyte 1050 ti oc -Corsair CX 500w psu -Hyper evo 212 cpu cooler -Fractal Design core 3000 atx case Flawless 1080p and fully fuctional with my Oculus.

I was building (I say was as it's complete now) a 'retro' PC and picked up an LGA 1155 Motherboard with 4GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM and a G620 CPU for £30 from eBay. I then paired that with another 4GB stick for £10 from CeX along with an i5 2300 for £22. It is absolutely staggering at just how cheaply you can make a PC nowadays. Keep up the awesome work dude!

I've built PCs for over 25 years and always covered the thermal paste over the whole area and never had a problem...until I bought a top end mobo and 8 core cpu already fitted on the board from Scan. The PC overheated straight away. I stripped it down and saw that the thermal paste was barely covering a quarter of the cpu. I took pictures to prove it. I cleaned the paste off ,covered the cpu with Arctic Silver, reassembled it all and it has been working well for 3 years now.

I'm not sure if you've said, but please watch out for ESD damages. It is a real damage to the electronic parts, it's the best if the person who puts the system together grounds himself or herself in order to prevent any unnoticed damages. After an ESD damage, your system may work, however, you may have issues and it's very hard to troubleshoot. You can buy these anti-static wrist straps, they're not that expensive, and you need to only buy it once. It will come always handy when doing any modifications in your PC. Plus an example for an ESD damage case: I've damaged an old RAM modul of mine like this, while I was cleaning my motherboard. I've picked up the RAM slot, cleaned the board, put it back. It did work, but after the cleaning was done, however, some applications that were using it ran into a memory error while they were running. While running Memtest I've found that one of the RAM modules is having issues, so I've asked a friend of mine to take a look at it (he's good with electronics). Then he showed me the ESD damage on the module under the microscope. So it was causing my issue with the freezing and hanging applications with memory errors.

Just an extra little tip . With all am2/am2+/am3/am3+ boards the manual recommends that's you populate slot 1 and 3 then 2 and 4 in that order for the ram with slot 1 being the one closest to the cpu . This is extremely important to remember for these am boards especially if you have 3 sticks of ram. As I have had more than 1 customer come in complaining of poor performance o these platforms only to find slot 1.3 and 4 populated . The problem being solved by simply moving from slot 4 to slot 2 and poof performance was back .

That HDD will probably be a little uncomfortably slow if used with pretty much any anti-virus software besides Windows Defender, what with the 5,400 RPM and 32 MB cache. If somebody using a similar drive needed to use AV besides Defender, I might recommend disabling Defender for common desktop use and trying to see how things run with their preferred software alone. If such a user was savvy and seasoned enough to manage without AV (or just did all their deep web searching on a little Linux installation), then that drive should perform decently, imo. The case will also be pretty tight, so there might be a problem fitting a GPU with a larger cooler/heatsink, so you'd definitely have to do some measurements if it's a dual or tri-fan cooler, and move your HDD into a slot that won't conflict with any expansion cards. Other than that, this looks like a really legit budget build to me. It even looks aesthetically sound! Good stuff.

That's such a nice little rig... - M5a97 R2 LE is a nice budget board, with 970 chipset which is more than ok for the Fx CPUs, being a mid to high end native AM3+ platform fully 125w cpu capable, that even features rear and front USB 3.0, and up to 32gb DDR3 1866 and all SATA3 connectors, so pretty solid for upgrades inside the platform. The only real downside is the lack of disipated VRM, a huge matter on such an overclockeable technology like Fx series. For that i would suggest M5a97 R2 (non LE). or m5a97 Evo... - Fx4300 is a nice little budget CPU... it can be found for 1/2 the Fx6300 price and will provide about 3/4 the performance, including a slightly improved singlecore performance, thanks to his higher frequency. It is also THE lowest consumption FX cpu. on both single and multicore performance, it is very very close to Phenom II X4 945 c3... but with some newer instruction sets included. It is a nice stop gap for maybe one year up until getting an Fx8350/70. -GTX750Ti Despite being kind of dated and somehow underpowered for today's needs... it is still a good gaming card for lower resolution (A.K.A. 1366x768) in which can perform as good as Rx570, so yes, it is a good gaming card even for 2020. - 8GB DDR3 1600/1866 is a nice sweetspot for this ring, and it is good to be in 2x4, since 4gb sticks can be purchased really cheap and throwing 4 then 8, then 12 and finally 16gb. It is safe to mention that 16gb is the maximun reasonable for ANY AM3+ CPU, including Fx8350/70, since in the future when 16gb be a little short for gaming and stuffs, Fx series will be way obsolete. - I wouldn't have picked an aftermarket "fancy" cooler, just a stock 125w AM3/AM3+ cooler, which are extremely cheap used will provide a little extra cooling compared to stock 95w... the money saved MUST be used in a 120gb SATA3 SSD. That's the real deal to get a somehow "improved" experience, not for gaming but just for everyday usage. - The 500gb HDD is ok, but not that much... nowadays games have skyrocketed in their disk usage... some games even needing 100GB of disk space... it is ok, nevertheless, to put a 500gb HDD and later on add another 500gb disk. - The case is kind of ok, only real problem with cases are the need of 2x cooling solution, one frontal in and one rear out, this provides such an improved temp compared to no fan, it is mandatory to be honest... The next thing to search for is frontal USB 3.0 since it will really handy, i'll promise. But there are 5.25 bay brackets which have USB 3.0 Is this an "OK" build for 2020? well, yes... for the right price... and i know what i'm talking about... since i have an Asrock n68-vs3 fx + Fx4300 + R7 250x 2gb + 8gb DDR3 1333 + 1 120gb SSD + 2 legacy 160gb HDD, and i can play older Triple A tittles and modern MOBAS at 1360x768 high 45+fps no problem. Main limiting factor is the MOBO (only SATA2, no USB 3.0 and has a tendency of making CPU throttle every now and then)

Good video and should give first time builders a few pointers when putting things together. If you need to get a manual for the motherboard, try and get the model/board reference number and look up a few online manuals from the vendor (failing that, Google is your friend). If anyone has a slightly higher budget or stuck for a decent GPU, I would recommend slotting in a GTX 970 which can be readily available for about the price of a 1050ti in the used market & performs as well as an RX 470/GTX 1060 3GB.

Here's a budget PC build that's a little higher end than this: FX 8320 Black Edition 16GB ADATA DDR3 1600 GTX 1050Ti (I chose the Gigabyte OC edition) ASUS 970 Pro Gaming/Aura Motherboard Noctua NHU-14S For newer builder's I'd suggest getting either an NZXT S340 or Phanteks P400S for ease of building 128GB Samsung SSD (any brand will do, this is for OS) 1TB Hitachi HDD (again, I'd recommend WD for this as their drives are usually cheaper but I got the Hitachi on sale) Set your CPU multiplier to x20 for a quick and stable OC to 4.3GHz and you have a decently beefy 8 core chip, the Noctua cooler keeps it cool and almost dead silent (even at 90% fan speed), 16GB is plenty of RAM for almost any amount of Chrome tabs, the Phanteks case would be my pick due to all the dust filters, fan controls and RGB options available, plus all the sound deadening keeps it all quiet, The reason I chose the 1050Ti OC is because the card has a small factory OC, Gigabyte are a trusty brand and the card's fans are OFF up to 50C meaning the system is almost dead silent even under load.

Nice build guide. I have the same CPU cooler, its a great quality cooler which is very silent and with great performance for the small tower model heatsink design. It would also be very interesting to see the performance increase when this CPU is overclocked. These ones usually overclock fairly well, and can really use it. As you thought, the CPU is the bottleneck here, as the AMD FX series is quite weak core wise because of the 2 integer, 1 floating point unit module design. One remark on the HDD choice, if possible avoid getting a green or eco hard drive for a budget build. They are build to be energy efficient and trade in performance for it, while used prices (at least, here in the Netherlands) are quite the same

A athlon 950 is much a better choice, for future upgrades /ddr4 support / Faster cpu in general... And it costs around 40-50 pounds..

Oh and a tip, the wording on the black plastic pieces on the header pins always go away from the board.

After all these years, you'd expect the power, LED and reset switches to be on a single connection like the HD audio. It would save a lot of time and messing about. XD

Try the x79 platform, it's not the cheapest for motherboards, but the quality of cpu-s is remarkable. I personally use a 100$ MOBO from aliexpress and $100 e5-1650 and it runs so very smooth :)

1:58 Thought the backplate was the piece on the underside of the mobo that helps with installing the CPU cooler

This was essentially my budget build in 2014.... was under 500$ in fact you are using the same case I still have cause even though I upgraded a case was not something I could justify spending money on when I could get a better graphics card rather then a case.

For its time, that was a pretty competent little PC, only thing that was missing was an SSD. Nowadays, I'd say it's a little underpowered, and I certainly wouldn't recommend FX to anyone.

You feature alot of "Palit" branded cards, although I have not heard much about them, they seem to be manufactured pretty decent.

Disable HPET in your bios or in Windows for Overwatch benchmarks. It's a bug in Overwatch right now. if you have HPET enabled, it will cause the GPU usage to go down when your CPU usage goes up.

I got a hd 5850 and it works great, a little less performance, but it was only $40 where I live, and that power supply could definitely handle it.

I wish I watched this before building my PC (though that was January '17) because I had no idea what to do with the hinge thing.
