Ok, you got me subscribed with this tube amp series. Safety of tubes and voltage needs to be emphasized. Years ago I had a Knight t-175 linear amp with 6L/6J tubes. I had the top off (always ran hot) one night, reached over it to get something behind it, and bumped the anode with my hand. The result was me being thrown 6-8 feet across the room and against the wall. Came to about 30 seconds later with an entrance, and exit, arc burn just below my thumb where the 600+ volts entered and came back out. Had an aAmeritron al-811h linear amp as well, with four 811A tubes. Kept the living room nice and warm during the winter.

I've built/repaired so many of these types of amps over the years. Realy simple circuit and easy to adapt for different sounds/feels. I reckon I've still got enough spares to make about 3 of em. LOL. Stay safe and don't worry too much if you start talking to yourself then answering back. (Don't listen to me, I'm crazy. Ha Ha.)

Hi Paul! Glad to see that you are trying to stay safe! I am glad to see that you are digging your feet into the world of vacuum tubes! I just wanted to mention that I typically frown on solid state rectifiers for vacuum tubes. Use of these diodes will actually shorten the life of a tube by "cathode stripping" which is caused by the high voltage being applied before the heaters get nice and hot. I have 3 Tektronix scopes, 531A, 535A and 545A and these copes do use solid state diodes, there is a time delay relay that allows the heaters to come up to temp before the HV kicks in which is about 45 seconds. Either way, I am fascinated with tubes, especially on my 535A which was made in 1962, is all original with the exception one 1 or 2 tubes and works perfectly fine!

I worked with them as an apprentice in some old equipment in the main exchange. The advantage was the floor was air conditioned and had a full climate control system - it was like working in heaven!!! The job itself was horrible and repetitive - but very very comfortable. More relevant - I have a good friend who dabbles very seriously with Valve amplifiers - fanatic doesn't do him justice - but he won a competition for design "the perfect" valve amplifier, the prize was having his creation made - and It was (is) beautiful - a single quite large silvered valve surrounded by glowy things and nixie tube displays over a stainless turntable - Dr Who would kill for one. I don't do music but it sounds incredible. We're having hourly updates - the nice toos become must doos faster than you can think - like you we've shut restaurants, pubs, parks and recreation while supermarkets are stripped bare as soon as they open. We had the first "failed to make reasonable attempts to comply" arrest and conviction today - it was easier back in 1984

@@learnelectronics We've gone for "social distancing" - most businesses are closed, only essential shops plus nurseries and schools used by medical staff kids and "vulnerable" kids open. The low paid are now the not paid, so their kids are defined as vulnerable and they are entitled to free school meals. Only 1 person can visit shops, they limit numbers to maintain safe distances, you can walk in the park or whatever you feel like as long as you stay away from everyone else - it's pretty cool. Tonight is the first night all the nightlife will be closed - £1000 fine and/or imprisonment (the sentence is the equivalent of the self isolation time). The only "entertainment" is takeaway food which must be delivered. Supermarkets now limiting to 2 items of any product to prevent hoarding. I'm going into town to charge my car and then a walk in the park, then back home to eat a TV dinner and a glass of something

First part- it would have been useful to state that the grid needs to be negative to the cathode, i.e. negative to ground in your diagram. 10:20 you got the tone and volume controls crossed. Removing some of the distortion on peaks when the power supply current limits makes the sound worse? Really? Stick some resistance is series with the diodes if you want this...

In what way will solid state rectification sound different from tube rectification? Sounds like the usual guitarists mumbojumbo but I expect you to know better than that. So please enlighten me!
@learnelectronics
4 жыл бұрын
Tube rectifier have a voltage sag as they are driven hard resulting in a drop a 3-5 volts that just gives a vintage tube amp a "sweet" sound. But everything has to work together...ie clipping in the preamp. A little sag in the power amp stage. Solid state rectifiers dont sag unless input voltage drops.
@trevortjes
4 жыл бұрын
@@learnelectronics And I assume that sag isn't equal to the usual diode voltage drop?
