Ngl, I know it’s selfish but I secretly hope this channel stays a hidden gem. With most other channels that tackle a similar concept, I always fear that one of my mosey play will go peeking where they shouldn’t.

I know this is the wrong video, but I have been binging your Let's Build an Encounter series. I ran a variation of your black dragon encounter for my party last Saturday and they LOVED it! Due to some excellent charisma checks from the bard and warlock, they actually managed to convince the adult black dragon to help them fight an adult green dragon they need to slay for a separate quest. But HOLY COW! Your encounters are amazing, and I thank you for putting these on here for us. You're the man

Wow. Once again, simply astounding. Thank you so much for listening to my feedback, I'm so satisfied with how spicy this encounter is! I just love the idea of a city full of knowledge but with a mysterious secret, it adds to almost any campaign setting. I can just imagine an NPC wizard saying, "I don't know the answer, but I know the one place you can find it..." only for the party to potentially have to hunt down that wizard later on. This will certainly serve me well in my campaign.

Yes! I have been waiting for this one! Great job as always! I love the idea of the Oblex becoming so smart that the mind flayers work for it. I could even see it becoming a replacement for an elder brain for a hidden mind flayer colony. I'm definitely using this in my current campaign.

I've just had my players being leat to the organization for "an interview". Did end up as expected. Most of them got charmed by the oblex and then they had to fight the golem while the oblex just got away having eaten the memories of the wizard. It was great fun. Now the characters are pissed and want to find out what is really going on. Thank you :)

I'm writing this campaign setting were its a dark fantasy city where the players have to pull off heists that require them to evade capture in a magical police city-state while also not upsetting the delicate pillars that keep the city afloat and prevents it from getting overrun by monsters constantly knocking on the door. I found myself in a bit of a slump as I thought I made the city too secure that lore-wise the players wouldn't have a reliable way to fall back and hide if they get caught (other than the monster infested sewers) as a thieves guild that had nothing to offer legitimately would be under too much observation. But this video has just given me a lightbulb as this fits really well into the gross and morbid setting and the Oblex's knowledge services give a very good legitimate reason to let a criminal organization thrive in such a secure city. Simultaneously the faction can hand out quests for the party and give the players a safety net if and when they get caught. Thank you for this, I'm definitely going to use this idea

I just had an idea similar to this earlier today. Instead of an organization it's the mayor of a city who is always behind his desk and who wears a lot of perfume. The Oblex's main body is on the lower level and the tether is coming out though the floor.

You're underrated and it's sad. You deserve more subs. Now, I am a big fan of aberrations. And may you consider a Gibbering Mouther (from my own) or a Star Spawn (from someone else's comment). Also, if it would be possible on the party level recommendation you'd add like a little parentheses for a party of 1-2 player(s). My "party" are small and to be honest... I have no idea how to balance it out. Thanks lads!
@HiddenNerdySide

Thanks for the kind words and both are on the list! All my encounters are balanced around what is deemed the "official average" part size, which is usually 4 or 5. If you have a part of two players, for the majority of my encounters, you'll want to stick with the higher level side of things :)

Great video! I myself have tried using an Adult Oblex in a game of mine as a one-slime tavern crew who would be open about their Ooze nature and use their simulacrums to handle a large establishment. They would be a bit of a nosey but overall-well meaning host who likes their guests to spread rumors and tell stories, and even willing to share some knowledge they gathered sitting around the place in exchange for stories of your own (with a slight homebrew with the oblex being able to gain memory substances from communicated information without memory draining and gaining another personality, but still have that option available if desperate for deep-held secret information). Overall, a more neutral if not even potentially good-aligned take on an oblex.

Absolutely love this and I may tweak it to fit the homebrew world I’m building, where cults (larger and more dangerous, and smaller Midsommar style ones) are pretty common, and I have a Thieves Guild called the Black Scarabs that could be a source of information. The leader is a Spectre(Grim Hollow Transformation) Rogue, a half orc/half fire genasi man that was killed by ghouls and crawled out of the grave during a failed job. I think this leader and the elder oblex would have a tenuous partnership, running the guild together and advising eachother.

This video is perfect! It’s not only an encounter, but a part of the world that can be so useful to any campaign, and is pretty rarely given any in-depth coverage. AND its a perfect use of a monster I had no idea where or how to use. Major props

Once again, bringing an awesome idea to the table that performed EXACTLY as suggested! I introduced him as "Oblek" - used the white line, golem, mysterious figure, and everything. They didn't even question it, and my players are now in the debt of this guy. He fit perfectly into Skullport where he is secretly vying for power against Xanathar. Common goals aligned with the players (i.e. to get rid of the beholder crime boss) and I have an established character for the next BBEG when they take out big X. Going to use a fetch quest later (that they will think nothing of) and then - BAM more plot hooks. Thank you for the well-researched and thought out plan! Hopefully I can pull off the execution...

fun fact! The oblex needs to have eaten the memories of a creature, but it doesn't necessarily need to finish the job for it to work. True, many lower CR creatures, like perhaps a spy or a cultist, would instantly die. But if a creature had a significantly large HP, the oblex could do a catch-and-release sort of deal. Perhaps the Oblex offers to give something to the party in exchange for one of THEIR memories, explaining up-front that there is a chance they may not survive. What could the oblex offer that would be worth this risk? That's up to the DM.

In my world I have a small, relatively young, nation established by alchemists who seek to push the progress of the world along even if they have to use force. So they try to unite and fuse every kind of technology, magic, skill etc. in order to create things that could change the world for the better. The "but" comes in with the fact that they really do use EVERYTHING, like a crashed nautiloid whose survivors were studied and the one illithid arcanist inducted into their ranks. It was then that the leader of the nation acquired an oblex in its early stages of development. She used it on great minds all over the world in order to acquire their skills and knowledge, and gather it in one creature for her use, creating an ideal assistant of sorts able to keep up with whatever she needed. Then she created a sort of shell/humanoid puppet body the inside of which functions as a bag of holding of sorts so that the oblex can remain sealed and relatively undetectable. Then she made more of them each connected to the original via a similar dimensional enchantment and then gifted them to other prominent alchemists/figures to both help them and keep an eye on them.

That’s a very interesting idea! I particularly love the idea of a nation derived from alchemists. It’s got a lot of potential! I could also see this nation hiring organizations like the Massa’Ista to find out more secret arcane knowledge spread across other nations.
