WHAT!!! the speccy version is superb, nice sprites, loads of color, the gems and both endings, I was blown away when i got this as a kid. The 128k version that is, which has the added bonus of the cool arcade music and better sound effect making it more fun to play. I'm surprised GamingHistorySource didn't use the 128 version in the lets compare.

I like how some folks knocks down the tg16 version .. no one took the system to seriously and i do not know why. it had a lot of great games and imports. Especially shooters and some great RPGs. It pioneered CD games to what it is today.. it was that system in japan that actually beat the NES at the time and died out in 1999. Not to mention the SuperGrafx was way ahead of its time..

The first time I played this was on MAME. Then I rediscovered it on Taito Legends. By that point, I'd completely forgotten the "Over the Rainbow" part of the melody (maybe it wasn't even on the MAME version), so when I watched some videos of it online, I was like "THIS FITS PERFECTLY!" Sure, I understand why they took that part out, legally, but it was nice hearing the completed tune.

I own several versions of this game as well as Bubble Bobble (which you covered awhile back), I must say as an owner of the PCE CD and Mega Drive games that they beat the living snot out of the later PSX/Saturn incarnations of this game. They have all 10 worlds (the PSX and Saturn only have 7, seems based on the Amiga port), of course the music is neutered in newer ports due to copyright, though the one Xplosiv/Empire put out awhile back escaped this by including the high notes.

@Bloodreign1
13 жыл бұрын
@Bloodreign1 The ones on Taito Memories in Japan on PS 2, Taito redid the soundtrack to where it doesn't sound so hollow, it actually sounds good for a rearranged soundtrack. Of course the other music is still alive and well in Memories, nothing else was copyrighted (the main tune is Over the Rainbow), so Taito had to changed nothing else thankfully. Own the NES port as well, just doesn't seem as good, but has a couple few unique bosses that the arcade version doesn't have. SMS version is good.

The MD and PCE CD versions do retain the extra islands and the endings. The MD version must be played in Extra Mode to obtain all islands, I know this because I own both ports of the game as well as the original and Extra versions on Taito Memories and the original on Taito Legends. The two on Memories are on 2 volumes. The PS1, Saturn, PC (all from Acclaim) and Amiga versions are missing the last 3 islands. TG-16 CD is by far the best port of the arcade game. But even though I like the C64 version, I think they could have made it much better by issuing it on a cartridge, maybe 256KB in size. The entire RI game fits in the C64's ram (the current version) and I think they could have done a lot better with a cart format so there could be better sprites (more room, with needed graphics being swapped in and out) and doing that by cartridge would have bypassed Commodore's horrific slow storage drives.

The TG-16 is by far the best home version of the game, especially if you are playing with an emulator and can save and with CD quality original music. I even prefer it over the arcade version (because you can save at any point and it saves battery life on the GP2X). (The TG-16 also has a great port of Parasol Stars, the next game in the series.) The C64 version is really good given the limitations the VICII chip. What I don't like about the Amiga, ST and 64 version is the using the up on the joystick. Whenever I play these versions on emulators I always assign the up joystick as a second key or button (on the GP2X).

+Michael Castle I grew up with an Atari, colecovision and a C64 so I too am accustomed to a joystick rather than a pad. But I also found it difficult with games like rainbow island and bubble bobble to use up on the joystick. So when I play the games on PC emulators, I tend to map the joystick up to a key other than the cursor up key. It's also closer to playing the arcade versions which used a jump button as well.

They all look decent, at a time when many arcade conversions were so hosrrible they almost counted as a brand new game, but the Master System featured 16 color sprites, so at some point, someone actually made the decision to remove most of the color from the rainbows. Whoever is playing the game is playing silly. Should be collecting the diamonds. Amazing game but very hard to defeat some of the bosses so much so that Ocean software changed how you defeat some of the bosses to make the game easier. Almost no one got past island of Doh! Some versions of the game started with Toy island like the arcade then had islands in the wrong order. The Spectrum 128k played some where over the rainbow in the game almost as good as the arcade. Later version have to play copyright for that tune so the music was changed. The arcade version a very large machine hardly ever saw it in the UK.
