Well, I managed it so far. Sort of 🙂 Didn't have 2 x 2 so had to scale it down a bit. After painting I might feel brave enough and post it on whittling group 🤔 Great set of videos, nice bite sized chunks and really good instructions. Thanks for posting.

If you look at your carvings in a mirror it may reveal flaws you would otherwise miss. I do that in my pencil drawings. I once had a drawing that I was really proud of until I happen to see it in a mirror. The proportions were terrible! I trashed it it. From then on I periodically hold then up to a mirror as I’m working. Your carvings look awesome by the way, they’ll probably hold up to the mirror test pretty good. I may give carving a shot. Great videos!

@@lunsfordcarvings The videos, and especially how you explain your actions, are very helpful. Kevin, on the otherhand, says nothing at all, but allows folks the dignity of using their intelligence to understand what he is doing. I like that, too. And how he manages to turn out beautiful creations oftimes using nothing but a reshaped fish knife is astounding. P.S. Are you doing another ZOOM meeting next Saturday (4/23) or they just monthly? Thanks again!

Fantastic! I watched all the Santa carving , didn’t view the painting one yet. Thee amount of detail and time in this little piece alone. Makes me really wonder how on earth would you price a piece like that? I realize you work for pennies same an artist. But the sheer time, and everyone always says know your worth ! But how many people will spend 100 dollars for an ornament? I’m not cutting I’m really wondering how to charge for one. Anyway great video on the ability to teach and keep a clear view the whole time

Thanks Blake. Would you add a deeper shadow under the lip?
@lunsfordcarvings

Yes, I will accent that shadow and others around the face by using a brown shade of paint to help bring attention to the deeper cuts.

Could you go into a bit of a detail of how you make a triangle cut. ie the angle of the three cuts.
@lunsfordcarvings
3 жыл бұрын
My first cut is always parallel to whatever I am trying to accent. If it is the mustache, I cut right next to it, and then away from it, and then undercut so the triangle next to the mustache pops out. Removing that wood allows the mustache to stand out. Same with an arm or a triangle I would cut under an eye.

You get a lot of use out of those micro gouges, can you tell me what brand you suggest. I mostly carve wood spirit faces and little things. Up to now mostly all with a single straight knife. I’m looking forward to trying these new tools. Thanks for any tips on tool selection. Just a suggestion - if you don’t already you should get affiliate links setup on Amazon and with these knife makers - shoot I just spend $250 based on your suggestions. (-: Got to get the bucks however you can.

Hey Tim! These are dockyards and you can purchase them at Stadtlander Wood Carving. You can purchase them individually or in a set. I buy the u set that runs from 1.5 to 5 mm.

@lunsfordcarvings

I would get a 45 degree v tool and a soft v, and also get microgouges from 3mm to 5mm. That would be a good place to start!
