Very well paced video, many modellers show themselves doing what you covered today in real time, which is a bit like watching paint dry. Well done.

My advice is to start with a small layout or module. That way you're no overwhelmed by the size.

@@mattguey-lee4845 I love your advice, but I don't think I have the patients for that either. Thanks for that. But I think I will stick with the enjoyment of watching and visiting your awesome displays at the shows. Just knowing that creative people like you are out there just amaze me. I'm working on some electronic projects that people can use to implement into their layouts for replication of real life environments.

Scenery, INCLUDING ballasting is my favourite part of this hobby, in fact I was into WarGaming and WarHammer before doing a train build. I never wanted a real working railway, just something I could do a LARGE terrain diorama and I fell in love with this hobby! I’m addicted all around to it lol

In terms of roads I have found that the grey foam sheets sold in hobby and craft shops works really well. You can paint lines on it and it is very flexible and forgiving for lumps and bumps on the layout.

This looks really good Jimmy. I am very impressed with your puff ball trees but did not catch what you use as the base for these trees. They have come out really well in this demonstration. Once again you have been a source of inspiration and have made me want to get going again. My problem with ballasting is that I have 25+ metres of track!!
@DIYDigitalRailroad

Hey! So these trees are not really trees, they're literal balls of polyfill that are glued to the ground to simulate a canopy, they are used to cover large areas and you blend them into the scenery with regular trees.

Puff ball trees are the one tree I’ve yet to make! I need to check IF you have a video on making them. I love you do yours in none bathes and use some different colours. I use 4 colours and a highlight on my trees to give it less of a uniformed color and more natural

Some tips use some marbles in your half water and glue and it mix everything up every use, also you can use a bent piece of wire hanger and make a mixer for your drill.

I've done a lot of Rock Climbing in the Appalachian Mountains. I used trees as climbing anchors all the time. These trees can be right on the cliff edge and even in the middle of a cliff. I think it looks cool to have some shrubs and small trees in the middle of the cliff. I'm still trying to find some n-scale climbers for my cliff scene.

Wow Jimmy! Great video. That was a lot to digest, but now I have to find out what these puffball trees are… I noticed you had problem with your spray bottle earlier. I once had my wet water bottle clogged up for some reason so in a hurry, I grabbed a bottle of Windex and that worked just fine. I don’t know if it’s something you would do regularly but in a pinch it was OK. Also, I don’t think I have the patience for ballasting. So I am just going to try to use a stippling pattern on my Bachmann easy track.

You mentioned using real dirt and it gets crazy sometimes. I agree! I used real dirt in the past and I somehow accidentally glued it to the point it became almost impossible to remove! Using foam dirt this time around!

Interesting! It is amazing how there are so many different methods for applying scenery. I love seeing other people's approach to scenery - there is no one right way, and quite often you see something that might improve your own methods. I am in the camp that does ballasting as one of the last tasks - the grass is laid right up to the tracks, and the ballast goes over the grass, just like the real thing. However, your method of applying the ground cover is exactly the same as I do. As for the gravel road, I found a technique that works for me, and is different to how you did it. I put my gravel down dry, and then use a foam brush to level out the gravel. Then a fine mist of IPA with a little water to wet it all, and finally apply the glue mix, but using a pipette just touching the gravel, so it is not dropping on the gravel and creating craters (and it will, even though it is already wet). While I currently have no requirement for puffball trees, I like your method of doing them at the actual site. Really does appear to make it easier to do.

I've found that if you use a mustard squeeze bottle,( the one with the smaller opening, for fine ballasting . You'll have more control. It comes out fast so don't tillt too much. It doesn't go all over the scene.

Good video Jimmy. Being kind of new (working on first layout) I was wondering what is the differences between using a bristle brush and sponge bush for the initial spreading of the white glue??? Anyone can respond. Thank you.

Jimmy, Not only a great episode, but a great idea for an in show tease. If you ever get 3 up you could include in the episode you are sweeting a brief V.O. of Wa'Sup. Don't tell that future story. You want eyes to return. What I'm thinking is if you were out at a Charity Store and find some bird cake toppers. HMMM! What could we do with this? Or cutting some leftover plywood or hardboard. And tease another style of building back scene flats. You get the idea. HUGS TO THE DIY DYNAMIC DUO. Holiday love to your beautiful bride. Jim in N.Y.

Somewhat random question time. In the beginning of the video, you were using a chip brush to clean off the layout. When I do this, I end up with "stuff" everywhere on the floor and in all sorts of corners. Conventiional wisdom would say to just get out the vacuum. But as N scalers, we have small items everywhere that we do not want to suck up in a vacuum. Question: How do you clean up your train room of all the small ground cover that get's everywhere, without also sucking up n scale items (like figures)?

Hey Heath - check out Mike Fifer videos. He has an attachment to his vacuum made up of skinny tubes that allow the vacuum but stop people and barrels and whatnot disappearing.

After I glue the scenic material down and let it dry, I go over it with a small hand held vacuum that is used solely for this purpose. I empty the vacuum into a container to recycle on to the bare spots that inevitably show up and it blends in nicely with different colors and sizes of scenic material. Just make sure not to vacuum up any ballast! Vacuum that up with another vacuum and discard it.
