Mid Atlantic accent. Was created by an Australian man who thought thats how everybody should speak. It was taught in schools in major cities like New York and a lot of people in show business came from there.
@RyanAllen1217

I believe this was also adopted further partially out of necessity, as microphones and speakers of the age weren’t very good at recording and reproducing the bass tones of more natural human voice. The Trans-Atlantic accent made speech a lot more treble-focused, and things sounded clearer because of it.

If you look at a cookbook from back then, you'll see all kinds of recipes for stuff that no one would feel the need to make today because you could just buy it at the store, or there are WAY better options now. People had to make from scratch, every little tiny food item that existed, including a lot of snacks. Pre-made bagged snacks like chips were just starting to become a thing. People were only just starting to get used to stuff like that.
@daytonasixty-eight1354

@@Melissa0774 That's a big reason why everyone was skinnier back then too. You had to cook your food and buy it relatively fresh. In 1950 we were just 2 1/2 years out of the restrictions on food from WW2, when flour, sugar, butter, eggs, meat and other items were strictly rationed. So I'm sure there was still excitement when you could simply stock up on these recently restricted foods and entertain. In Britain, rationing didn't end until 1954, so the US was still ahead of the curve in food production and availability. All foods were appreciated and making a meal to share with friends was probably a happy event, in contrast to the war years.

Well, maybe it was a matinee. Also, social graciousness was just what most people did back then, otherwise people labeled you as "rude" or "unfriendly." I mean how much work is it at the end of the day?

This is what cheap local restaurants are for. You see a movie with friends and want to eat after? You go to your local favorite place. Saves you the trouble of realizing you only have two cups, half a bowl, and maybe a head of cabbage in the kitchen.

I wonder when they started labeling butter in tablespoons on the wrapper?
@smadaf
3 жыл бұрын
@@spinchsprimkle6541 , I don't know. I wish I did. Land O Lakes was the first to sell butter in quarter-pound sticks, in 1920. It's hard to find butter sold as sticks outside the U.S. and Canada. For many years, there were two standard shapes of quarter-pound sticks, one longer and narrower than the other; it was an east-west, regional difference. The wrapper has been labeled in common measurements since at least the early 1970s, maybe longer (I don't know). There are butter rulers, for measuring amounts from sticks of butter without the measurements on the wrapper; here's a patent for an improved one, from the '50s (patents.google.com/patent/US2948064A/en).

That's butter and milk and cheese. That's an amazing amount of calories. But as long as you made the food yourself back then it wasn't really considered bad food. Although I am surprised by the scarfing down of the soda. That was usually considered a treat back then. I know in the 1970s we might have had soda maybe once a month as a treat.
