Hi Michael, I was one of the subscribers who questioned the gib adjusting screws through the side of the topslide body. At that point in time, I was not aware of the fact that the gib on your machine was tapered. Otherwise, my comment would have been unnecessary . What also threw me was the only single screw, which I took to be merely to hold the gib in place, not actually adjust it. I have a new mill, and all three axis gibs are tapered with a screw at each end to adjust and lock the gibs correctly. Your new lathe tools look to be able to do what you require. Setting the angles was a bit complicated, but fortunately, you can tilt the table on your mill. I was thinking of how I could make similar tooling on my mill if required, but the one angle would require the head to be angled instead of the bed in order to achieve the 7° tilt. I have a similar vice, so the rotational angle's not a problem. It will take some more thinking. I think. Thanks for your video. Regards from Canada's banana belt. 🤞🇨🇦🍌🥋🇺🇦🕊🇧🇪💩🏁👍

I have been secretly following Your channel for a while now. I totally agree with the center height versus taper measurement thing. There will, however, be problems when the taper is really thin or very short. If the taper is really thin, the center height has an impact. Also, when the taper is short, it is hard to measure it using the comparison method to a degree when it would be good enough. In those cases the old and (t)rusty sine bar is Your friend. Last month I made a tool holder quite exactly like Yours. It is funny how I stumbled into the very same problems with it as You did. First of all, why in earth did they decide to make the center hole 3.8 mm? You butchered the screw, I made a pin. Same function but just a bit different approcach. The angles for the blade are also a pain. As we have a very similar milling machine, I had quite similar problems with setups. Unfortunately my milling machine (Schaublin SV51 1955) cannot tilt the table so I had to use another vice in the vice to get the correct angles. I would suggest to get yourself an electronic spirit level. Just make sure it is one of those that are able to change the reference. They are generally cheap but unfortunately theydo not come with spirit but there is still some good spirit with them. And, they are accurate enough. Oh, I made a video over making this TNMG tool holder. It is spoken in Finnish but it has good, hand written (no google comic there), subtitles in english and german. Your shed looks quite similar to mine ...

*Those gib screws might or might not be adjustment screws IF the manufacturer determines that but I have never known them to be adjustment screws. They are gib locking screws.* *_They are for locking the gib down to give rigidity when machining._* A lot of manufacturers put threaded handles on the screws so you can lock the gib by hand quickly. I would consider adding 1 or 2. My lathe came with 1 gib locking screw and I have a 14X44. Don't listen to everyone who comments. We all know there are youtube experts that have never set foot in a machine shop.

The older Myford lathes all had parallel gibs. The topslide on mine, a 1949 vintage, has four 4 BA set screws with locking nuts to adjust the gib tension as per the manufacturers manual. Many owners fitted extra screws to enable locking the cross and top slides. The saddle is provided with a locking mechanism, but the slides do not have unless modified.
@opieshomeshop

@@ronwilken5219 I don't have any adjustments on my machines. I have one locking screw on my compound on the lathe and I use it because the compound vibrates when doing cuts and I've noticed this with every lathe I've ever owned over the last 30 years. And its even more pronounced when using a tool post grinder. I've never seen a compound without any sort of locking gib. Rusty's is the first.

Sanding takes much longer than scraping. But for me it's easier to control. As for oil retaining, you're right, but I don't really consider the top slide as a moving part. Way less then the ram of the shaper or the table of a milling machine.
