Absolute joy to watch you play this one for the first time! Frequently feel that this is probably the most intrigued and satisfied I've ever felt playing a game, and it really helped me get through lockdown 1.0 last year - it felt rich enough to be a wonderful injection of life in all its colours into a very weird point in time. I admit I had a few very late nights on this one. Completely agree this isn't a great example of a chill streaming game - it suited late evenings and cosy hot drinks for me, as it's not always comfortable or pleasant to engage with some of the people in Revachol. I hope you enjoy continuing to play it in your own time and find it as captivating as I did (I am inspired to play it again watching this, especially now the extra content is in there - the voice acting is impeccable, and brings that writing to life so well).

In general I don't think it is a good thing that the immediate response of comfortably middle class, liberal gamers to the depiction of a drug addicted child spending his time throwing rocks at a corpse is to be angry about the language he uses.....which is of course why he is there. Poverty and deprivation is not polite, or pleasant, nor should it be. Cuno as depicted in this game is a scream and a spit in the eye of all well meaning do-gooders in and out of video games, and he could not be otherwise for the game to work as it does. Joyce is a polite and compassionate representative for all that is wrong with the world, Everart is a coniving and ruthless idealist that feels slimy but is the way to save the world. Cuno is a cursing, slur spitting gremlin because that is what gringind poverty is, it demands to be reacted to. Which is why if you try to reason with him or be polite to him he will hate you, but punch him or try to understand him and he will respect you. Actions, not words, is how you get through to Cuno and what he represents.

I dont think Disco Elysium is the game to play if you want a chill stream, its a constant critique of both ideologies and social norms, designed to make you uncomfortable and reflective

I don't know if you mean specifically me or chat in general, but I do see your point about Cuno being a product of the environment in which he finds himself. I wouldn't say that I'm angry about the inclusion of slurs - more that I felt like I was being pulled in a few different directions while trying to stream. Obviously people are going to focus on that language and I think (rightly or wrongly) they look to me to insulate them from adult themes somewhat. I wasn't expecting it - more fool me. I do feel like you can represent that character without using the f-slur, for what it's worth, but I appreciate not everyone feels the same way

@@JohnnyChiodini I think it's fair you wanted to shield your audience. But it is the kinda game that goes all out. Racism, homophobia, sexism, facism are all included to create a parallel world in fiction. I think the inclusion of the slur is obviously a controversial decision, but you see that by their self sensorship within the game that they do not think it's remotely OK. It's included to make the game feel real, and shocking.

Going to be honest I thought the moderation for this stream was not great. Not in that the mods overstepped their bounds, but in that they were reminding people about slurs when none were even occurring. It felt like a huge overcorrection. There's content warnings and then there's bringing it up unnecessarily when it would be best to just move on. I also didn't appreciate the language used with 'Justifying' which feels accusatory and like people are totally fine with the use, very much a sort of "How dare you!" which I don't think was expressed by anyone in chat. I know nobody cares, but just my two cents.

It's an amazing game, with some stunning writing and it feels like one of the best captures of a roleplaying experience guided by a GM in video game format, but I would absolutely not want to stream this as a first playthrough (or maybe even second, tbh). It's more of a personal experience I think, but content-wise, a let's play where you can edit it and sit and ruminate and pontificate without the need to worry about/interact with chat seems to work best. I love this game so, so much, but recognize that it contains themes and language that are extremely problematic, especially for streaming. I was so excited to see Johnny play it, but seeing their discomfort at times honestly broke my heart. As much as I would love to continue experiencing this game with you, I would totally understand if you didn't move forward with streaming it. Just know that the brief glimpse into your journey in Revachol gave all the feels.

Not sure why there was so much hate from people for Johnny playing a true RPG for a change. Being uncomfortable is a big part of life, I like when games don’t ignore that. And I love how this game interprets mental health…Reminds me of my own brain! Much rather this than Horizon or Dishonored, as it’s actually original and unique, although I’ve played both those as well and enjoyed them.

The fact that Tommy Le Homme is voiced by Mark Holcomb (guitarist for the band Periphery), and several characters are voiced by Mikee Goodman (vocalist for the band Sikth), just seems really cool as a casting decision to me. Like, there aren't your Yuri Lowenthals or Roger Craig Smiths or Liam O'Briens in this cast, and it feels more 'real' as a result?

I've been playing this on and off for awhile and haven't gotten much farther than Johnny did, but I'm really pleasantly surprised to see how different their playthrough is compared to mine even though I'm also playing Sensitive. And Measurehead - while probably better not to be introduced to for the first time on a live stream - has to be one of the strangest characters I've ever encountered in a game.

I absolutely love this game. I knew a couple of the people who did some of the original voice acting when there was very little. And its approaches to class and race and everything else are better than most mediums if I’m honest. But for your own sake, I doubt you want to keep streaming it without the chat shitstorm happening again, because, depending on how you play it, you may have to interact with the drug-addled 12 year-old terrors again. And clearly doing a game that has nuanced characters and no clear “bad guy” and “good guy” just doesn’t seem to translate well to some people. Or maybe an edited let’s play? PS-Kim is the best.

Ok I’ve been thinking about it further, and I think I have changed my mind here. I have another complaint. The audio here wasn’t just muted, but so was all nuanced discussion of the topic. There were people in the chat that tried to give context to why the game chose to use this language that were civil and honestly justified in their assessment. They were in no way saying slurs are ok, they were explaining how they were being used as a tool in the game, and yet it was implied that they were basically using those slurs themselves. That’s… not cool. This game wants you to mull these things over and it definitely wants you to come to the conclusion that any and all bigotry is bad. This was not a good game to stream. Johnny didn’t do their research and wasn’t prepared to deal with it, while juggling an audience. The right response should have been to facilitate kind, nuanced discussion, or to switch to a different game as soon as it became clear Disco Elysium has a tone that wasn’t what Johnny was looking for. Shutting down anyone who actively wanted to engage with the text and it’s layered implications was definitely the wrong, knee jerk reaction.

I've only watched others play, but I really like the environmental story telling, the music that stays with you for days, and that your choices do change certain aspects of the game. Skipping things has consequences. It's not a cozy and comfortable game, but it does challenge how you see things if you let it. If you breeze over conversations because they're "difficult", then what have you learned? Definitely a heavily philosophical game. But, hey, that's my opinion and I know it doesn't matter to you.

That’s fine, not every game has to be a perfect fit for every person. This game is much closer to reading a piece of great literature than playing essentially every other game I have played except maybe Pathologic, which almost threw even me off. Had to restart that one several times over several years to get through that beast. The advantage of this game, however, is it’s essentially impossible to fail at it as long as you keep clicking through the dialogue. Pathologic very badly wants you to fail and hands you no life vest once you start sinking.

Disco Elysium is a game that has been on/off my radar for a while - something catches my attention (art style, themes, hideous ties...), only for something else to shy me away from it (presence of slurs, having to play a white dude with THAT facial hair, content warnings given & heeded). Kim Kitsuragi, though? WOULD THAT WE COULD PLAY SUCH A SMOOTH- yet, of course, the very premise of the game requires its playable character to be Standard Average Human (which, in modern media, means an able-bodied white man) in order to place the player in the role of "Outsider" to incidents of racism, homophobia, sexism in order for the game to comment on it as it does. The french accents help me distance myself from the racism directed at Kim, being so outside my experience, but mostly I was able to roll with it where I COULDN'T shrug off Cuno because Kitsuragi is THE ACTUAL SMOOTHEST. Nothing horrible is ever allowed to happen to that man.

Yeah Johnny doesn't want them to think he thinks the same as them but to me what he should of done is just given a statement before playing that there are characters who say stuff and have opinions that he doesn't agree with rather than mute it as that is just trying to hide the issue and hiding issues like that is what allows them to grow.
