Whether or not it's an oversight, I think it's supposed to be this unspoken tension where you know he's a bastard, and he knows you know he's a bastard, but he's also in a leadership position and compromising his authority with minor controversy or scandal would cause more harm than good, because targeting you for assassination to protect the secret of the town's piggybank is comparatively minor I guess.
