Very helpful! Hope you play a few more of these learning scenarios for us! Side note: I think you forgot to check for Rubble/Fire on that ITV (where you would have placed the Wreck counter) that got smoked by the T-80 in the first volley fire.

Good catch Kai. And I definitely want to film some more videos of this one in the future.

Great video again Wayne - thanks as always. I have this game and I personally wish they'd kept the counter draw for activation (from previous games like Blood and Bridges) instead of using cards. Minor gripe though - the game is great fun.

My pleasure Billy. I haven't played any of the previous games, so I can't comment on the differences with card draw, although I do have a ton of experience with chit draw (see all my Blind Swords ACW videos) and love that style of activation. Card draw seems the same, you just have to deal with a deck of cards instead of a cup of counters, right?

@@WayneHansen Yeah it's the same mechanic. I just think it's more random pulling chits than shuffling cards - particularly when there are very few cards. There's a tendency for some cards after shuffling to remain next to the same card they were next to before shuffling...which reduces the random aspect imo - again, particularly when there are very few cards But again, a minor gripe to a great game.

I get confused with this bot a fair bit tbh. I may over think things. Sometimes too, it "kinda" makes sense and others not so. for example, My 5 stacks of Russian tanks sat still for 6 or 7 turns because there was a US unit in range of them...so they just sat there and fired away. I have no idea how they would perform in that scenario in real life, but part of me thinks they would engage the enemy unit with a small force and manoeuvre...they did not. 6 turns, they sat there and plugged away until eventually they got rid of the M1 and moved forwards.

I know you posted this ages ago. But the best way to combat this is to use method #2 in the Solo assistant rulebook (Pg 4) 1. Choose one orders card for the formation, and evaluate each unit/ stack in the formation versus the same Orders card (recommended) OR 2. Choose an orders card for each unit or stack in the formation as you attempt its Action. A unit or stack should complete its Action (or Orders card) before the next unit/stack of the formation chooses an orders card.

Having played old school since the mid 70’s the emergence of to-hit numbers on multiple dice with multiple dice saving throws always seemed to be an intentional odds mystery gimmick only having a masters in statistics could possibly reveal. Is there some profound reason for this mechanic? Fill me in. I guess this discourages ASL “odds wonks” from getting a foothold in this product.

Seems like some of it is the different colored to-hit dice indicate different types of fire. Armor piercing, armor piercing with stabilization (improved shooting while moving), anti-tank guided missiles, anti-aircraft guns, anti-aircraft missiles, etc. Seems a clever way to show different kinds of fire without adding a lot of rules overhead.

The reason for multiple dice rolling is that when you do that the end results will show a trend towards the statistical averages, whereas resolving an attack with a single dice roll will leave the results more open to fluke results. On the other hand, having an attack roll and a saving throw contribute to a higher level of player engagement, in that both players always have something to do. CRT still have a place, in my mind, but I prefer a bucket of dice approach in grand tactical and tactical games, so it suits me fine.

I'm not sure if you plan on doing a review, if you do I'd be most interested in your comments on the Solo Assistant. I've played games in this series opposed and I really like the system and the period it covers. I haven't looked at the rules for the Solo Assistant but it looks like it guides play, as opposed to following a scripted response for the scenario, if that makes any sense. This is fine since its probably easier to manage. The question though is since the solo assistant seems to be somewhat random does it do a good job and result in sensible play or are you frequently making corrections.

I do intend to do a review Brad, and I'll make sure to talk about the solo assistant.
