@the Tan Van -- your comment reminds me of the King Missile song, "It's Saturday", that says something like "I want to be different...just like all the other different people". Me and a friend recorded a song during that same period (early 90's) about all of the marketing BS aimed at the 18 to 34 demographic. The recording sucks (shitty 4 track), and the song kinda sucks, but it will only take up 1 minute and 58 seconds of your time: soundcloud.com/opus-dufus -- it's near the bottom - song number 24: "18 to 34". Song 26 is pretty good, though (my friend's song). Number 25 is kinda funny...especially if you have ever lived in the bible belt.

You've solved a mystery for me. For years I was racking my brain trying to figure out where I could find that gut bursting commercial, but I had no clue what it was endorsing. Can't believe it was a freaking Mario game this entire time lol. Anytime I tried googling it, it would bring me to that scene from Monty python. On another note, that Duracell commercial scarred me for life. It was one of the things that lead me to developed automatonaphobia as a kid. As if Chuck wasn't enough of a cause.

I'm almost 40,and only once in my life have I had 'the gas' I was about 8 at the dentist, it was horrific. However Had a number of ops as a kid, related to cuts and removing glass etc (kids stuff) and my tonsils out when I was 7. All used a needle to knock me out. So I don't know how or why you'd be scared about the gas mask. Is it still even a thing. I thought it disappeared in the early 80s.

I had a similar experience with another 90s commercial. This one was for Liquid Plumr and claimed that it removed clogs twice as fast as Drano, and as the stuff went down the drain, a bottle of Liquid Plumr was revealed and got sucked down the drain. For some reason that ad always disturbed me, as well as the misspelling of "plumber" on the bottle, and I have had a bias against Liquid Plumr ever since.

Studying advertising and consumer trends from an earlier time can help give insight into how we exist as communities within society as a whole now, and can help us predict potential behaviors moving forward. The way information is available so readily today, knowing even the more recent patterns of consumption which have been shelved or abandoned entirely can be studied by the individual, and implemented or ignored with a more well rounded perspective than that of someone living in the prime of their life just twenty odd years ago. So, you are the hell watching this because while these are advertisements, the purpose of the video is to educate. It is a history lesson, and your mind is forever hungry for knowledge. So, while your conscious mind may be baffled by the practice, you are secretly feeding your subconscious information which will serve to guard you from impulses that these people in the recent past hadn't quite known the reason for the importance of defending themselves from. At least not in a tangible, laudable, defensible-with-evidence regard. I could carry on, but I just didn't want you to feel like you wasted time watching the video. There's a lot to learn about ourselves, as well as one another, when we study the media of the past. Keep dippin, my friend.

Not all but A LOT. I would know being that I work with kids ages 6-14. They have zero social skills, can't do simple tasks by themselves(one 13yr old could not figure out how to work a microwave ) and getting them to go outside and play some games is impossible. They rather play on their phones. At 5 years old I knew how to work a microwave, by 7 I knew how to do laundry and cook and my ass was outside playing most of the day.
